- Summer Newsletter 2015 -

Dear Friends,

We are in the height of summer here in Northern California, a glorious time to explore the beauty of nature and move our bodies! At our last Mastery session, we delved into the topic of Integral Fitness - the full expression of fitness in body, mind, heart and soul - and enjoyed a group experience walking outdoors together in silence. Our meditative walk was followed by the lovely LET exercise, Touching the World.

It is startling how the extraordinary appears in the ordinary just by slowing down and allowing for a simple change of context. As one member huddled close to a tree, she was amazed by the intricate world of colorful insects, harmoniously sharing the natural setting. We can all learn a lot about what's possible for us humans from the natural world that surrounds us. What are the ways you are stretching and growing in this season?

Our Summer Issue is dedicated to the extraordinary that can be experienced in sport - all types - including snorkeling, golf, mindful walking and the ITP Kata! Enjoy the afterglow of our Catching Fire conference with a synopsis of the event and 10 key ideas for keeping the flame alive.

In the spirit of community, please join us at one of our upcoming events, our Power of Practice ITP workshop in Bordeaux, France on August 28, Golf in the Kingdom Marathon events at the end of September and much more to follow in the fall.

Enjoy summertime, nature and your practice!

Warmest wishes and gratitude,

Pamela Kramer, ITPI President

A New Spin on Fitness

by Jill Robinson

Mastery Teacher and ITP Chicago Group Leader

When defining Integral Fitness within the nine commitments of ITP, the focus has generally been on the physical body. It is recommended that practitioners engage in at least three hours of aerobic exercise each week, incorporate additional strength training and enjoy deep stretching with an emphasis on our emotional, intellectual and spiritual awareness in every movement.

In our practice, exercise and movement are not a means to an end of finally fitting into a certain size of jeans or maintaining a specific mile pace. Integral fitness is being present to the joys of being alive.

During Catching Fire, ITPI's conference held in May, embodying this concept of integral fitness was an important component to the weekend. What a gift to be able to lead the Kata and a mindful walk in the beautiful surroundings of the Earthrise Conference Center, connecting to nature with mind, body, heart and soul.

Ten Ideas for Catching Fire

by Ken Piper, Mastery Cycle 6 Member
and ITP Tulsa Co-Leader

Leaving a rain-soaked Oklahoma prairie and arriving at the Earthrise Retreat Center in the dry California coastal mountains of Petaluma was a sort of induction to the

Catching Fire ITP International Conferenceheld May 15-17th. The weekend was a coming together of flame and kindling, wisdom and intellect, history and future.

Coming from an engineering and medical background, I must admit that some discussions were too sun-bright for me, but after reflecting on the entire weekend, all speakers effectively used prisms that offered a rainbow of insights.

An Excerpt from
Sports, Energy and Consciousness

Adapted from the Introduction

by Barry Robbins, ITPI Vice President & Mastery Teacher

Sports and fitness represent one of life's great theaters, where the mystical, remarkable and unusual unfold. The mission statement of SEC - "to accelerate the global evolution of human consciousness by providing transformational practices that translate the wisdom of sport's Ideal Performance State into practical training methods that include energetics, awakened states of consciousness, and the unification of body, mind, and spirit" - reflects the belief that our human potential remains largely untapped.

We live in a golden age of sports achievement where athletes are surpassing records and setting new standards of performance on an almost routine basis. More records are being broken now than ever before, an acceleration of performance offering us a glimpse into how limitless we are.

Learning from the Masters

by Steven Miller, M.A.

General Manager, The Shivas Irons Society

The extraordinary experiences I have had in the game of golf often occur on walks in the park with like-minded players. Having been blessed to play golf with kind, caring and masterful people, it is during those walks that I have laughed, discovered untapped reserves of my own spirit and grown as a human being.

At its best, the game of golf exposes players to the masters who value the ideas and lessons expressed in Golf in the Kingdom and who believe that everyone is able to share such an extraordinary experience.

Extraordinary, Yes - and Fun!

 by Adam Brucker, Executive Director

Shivas Irons Society

I witnessed the rarest of sights at last year's Golf in the Kingdom Marathon, something that many golfers may never have the opportunity to see.

About halfway through the round, while catching my breath on the top of a steep little hill in the middle of the course - my errant tee ball nowhere to be found - I was able to take in the sweeping 360 degree views of the entire course. What I saw, the thing that made me say "wow" out loud, was not a great golf shot or personal exhibition of skill, but rather something much more inspiring and meaningful.

In all directions, for as far as my eyes and ears could discern, every single golfer out on the course appeared to be completely immersed in the experience and having the time of their lives. As anyone who spends even a small part of their life out on a golf course can tell you, this is far from the usual state of affairs.

ITPI and all those who support and participate in this event each year should be commended for achieving what most organizers can only dream of: a fun, meaningful and impactful day of golf that transcends the usual hangups of the modern game and reveals a better path for all players to follow, both on the course and beyond.

Thinking in Color & Texture

by Shoshana Stadtler

When I think of Integral Fitness, my mind immediately goes to my happy place - snorkeling! This incredible activity exercises all parts of me - mind, body, heart and spirit.

I've never been one to keep quiet for more than a couple of moments at a time. This has been a problem for me when approaching meditation, so I have looked for more active meditations to quiet my mind. I found it challenging to keep quiet during hikes, so I tried rock climbing. Though it kept my mind relatively quiet and focused, it was too high-impact.

I've always loved snorkeling. I've traveled to many tropical places around the world and have had the chance to explore sea life in places like Fiji and Tulum, and most recently, Maui. I find that when I gear up and get into the water, I embody peace. Seeing amazing, beautiful ocean life is just a small part of the experience for me.

In Praise of the Kata

by Tim Cleary

Mastery Teacher and Co-Leader of ITP San Rafael

The Kata is a foundational practice, perhaps the foundational practice, in ITP. Created by George Leonard, it is part of the ITP program inspired by the ideas about integral practice outlined in Michael Murphy's The Future of the Body and Michael and George's combined experiences at Esalen Institute. After years of seeing many people have apparent transformations that disappeared after they returned home, they realized that two elements were missing: a long-term practice and a supportive community. Integral Transformative Practice was born! At its core, the ITP Kata is a beautiful blend of Eastern and Western practices.

George was the right man at the right time to create this sublime practice. Informed by years of writing and editing, he had a keen appreciation for clarity and brevity. The Kata was carefully crafted to be completed in 40-45 minutes, thus creating a manageable daily practice for busy people with busy lives.

4th Commitment

I accomplish at least three hours of aerobic exercise every week in increments of no less than twenty minutes. Three sessions of strength training a week are also recommended, but there is no commitment on this.

"Whatever exercise you do, we urge you to exercise with full awareness. Our experience shows that by keeping your mind focused on what you are doing, you can greatly increase the intrinsic pleasure of vigorous movement, as well as the benefits you receive."

What do you appreciate about the practice?

ITP practice invites me to explore inner and outer living and provides juicy opportunities to connect and integrate parts of myself that used to feel separate. I'm committed to the ITP Mastery program (now finishing my 4th year) and a weekly ITP group in San Rafael, because it's fun, comforting, exhilarating and the benefits keep streaming in and transforming me.

Tell us about one of your most powerful affirmations.

I never would have thought that my first affirmation a few years ago, "I'm graceful, free, beautiful and healthy at 133," would bring benefit to my inner world. I had felt embarrassed to assert an affirmation that focused on external appearance. I assumed I needed to choose other more spiritual affirmations to advance my soul. I was wrong.

"The athlete that dwells in each of us is more than an abstract ideal. It is a living presence that can change the way we feel and live."
