This month we wrap up our second Activate Your Advocacy: Parent Leadership Training series! We are inspired by the parent leaders who are participating in this cohort and can’t wait to see the waves you make as you move ahead in your advocacy. Keep your eyes out for our next Activate Your Advocacy: Parent Leadership Training series this fall!

We are also so excited to partner with The Arc Oregon to bring you Supported Decision Making in May and a follow up training, Putting the Pieces Together, in June. These trainings will work hand in hand to help families understand the basics of Supported Decision Making and know how to craft a Supported Decision Making Agreement to support young adults experiencing disability to live a self-determined life!

As always, thank you for being in community with us and joining us in the important work of supporting families experiencing disability.

Providing Support YOUR Way

We know families live on tight schedules, thats why we have been upgrading and improving the ways we can offer support to families and community partners! In the next few weeks you can expect to see options for pre-scheduling support calls, new ways to send messages, and, of course, our trusty support phone line! Making shifts like this can often cause some hiccups, so we ask for your patience over the next couple weeks! If you have tried to reach out and been unsuccessful, please let us know at support@factoregon.org

Disability Rights Oregon (DRO)

Equality. Opportunity. Independence.
Disability Rights Oregon works to promote and defend the rights of individuals with disabilities across Oregon. Their work is focused on ensuring that individuals with disabilities have the equality of opportunity, full participation and meaningful choice.

Disability Rights Oregon does this work by teaching individuals about their rights, standing up to injustice at a state level, and offering referrals and connections to other organizations in the state that support individuals with disabilities.

Legal Tip from DRO: Remember to request Prior Written Notice (PWN) when requesting services and supports for your student in special education. Using the PWN process does not guarantee that you will get what you want, but it does force the district to make a decision and explain it in writing. PWN process in three simple steps:
  1. Stop making oral requests and stop complaining to the principal.
  2. Put your specific requests in writing that finishes with “Please provide Prior Written Notice if the district is unable or unwilling to provide the requested actions and services.”
  3. Send those requests to the Director of Special Education in an email.
