Refuge, Region, and Headquarters: Transportation Planning with US Fish and Wildlife Service

Interested in learning more about the Public Lands Transportation Fellows Program? Wondering how a FWS assignment is different from NPS? Looking to hear more details about projects our fellows work on? Have questions about the differences between a fellow and an advanced fellow? Then this webinar is for you! 

In this 1-hour webinar, Nate Begay, Advanced Public Lands Transportation Fellow at Valle de Oro (VdO) National Wildlife Refuge, will provide a recap of the work he has accomplished from 2021-2022. This work includes development of the VdO trail plan and  refuge access plan, exploring funding opportunities, and other projects with Valle de Oro, the USFWS Southwest region, and USFWS Headquarters transportation branch. 

Presenter Bio:

Nathan Begay
Nathan started working as a transportation fellow at the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge in Albuquerque, New Mexico in September. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelors in Environmental Planning and Design and a Masters in Community and Regional Planning with a Physical Planning and Design concentration. In addition to graduate school, much of his work experience has been dedicated to working on public lands, including interning with the National Park Service (Canyon de Chelly National Monument and Salinas National Monument) from 2015-2016 and with the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (Steamboat Springs, CO) on trail crews for the 2017 and 2019 summer seasons.  

At the Valle de Oro Refuge, Nathan is excited to work within the complex and rich culture of the South Valley. In addition to working within this unique cultural landscape, he is looking forward to working with the Mountain View Community surrounding Valle de Oro. Nathan’s emphases creating greater connections within the refuge through better trail and public transportation connectivity, creating beneficial relationships with the surrounding community, and finding innovative ways to foster multi-modal transportation in the South Valley. Nathan is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation. He is Towering House Clan (Kinyaa'áanii), born for the Red Running into Water Clan (Táchii'nii) from Gallup, New Mexico.
