Platte County Federated Women's Democratic Club
The Women’s Club met via Zoom on January 11th. This was our first meeting of the New Year and our first meeting without our long time President Melba Nicolaisen who moved to Overland Park to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. First Vice President Alice Wadsworth will be our acting President until the Club holds a new election in March. A Nominating Committee was appointed consisting of: Alice Wadsworth, Rita McGuire, Sharen Hunt and Lee Karbaumer. The offices to be filled are: President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Nominating Committee has met twice since the January meeting. Nominations from the membership will be accepted at the February meeting. We will vote on a slate of officers at the March meeting and the new officers will be installed at the June meeting to take charge July 1. Helen Weigman, our current Treasurer announced that she needs to step down as Treasurer due to family obligations. If anyone is willing to step up, your help is needed!

Normally, in a non-election year, the Women’s Club would meet bi-monthly but with Covid-19 restrictions keeping most of us home much of the time and with so much work to be done at the state, county and federal levels, we decided to meet monthly this year.

There followed a discussion of what it means to be a Democrat. Pat King suggested a book “I Forget, Honey, Why Are We Democrats” and a lively discussion grew from there. Carol Clopton circulated an article "Here are reasons I am a Democrat." The author of this article is Jeffrey S. Nielsen that lists 21 reasons why. Click here.

After the meeting Lee Karbaumer made a list of Women’s Club Goals for 2021 and Alice Wadsworth made a list of Ways to Participate in Democratic Party Activities in Platte County.

At the February 8 meeting, the Guest Speaker will be Dr. Sofia Khan, founder of KC for Refugees. The vision of KC for Refugees is to help create a welcoming environment for refugees moving to and living in the greater Kansas City area. Their approach is to educate the community about the refugee resettlement process and connect local refugees with each other and with their Kansas City neighbors. Refugees who come to America include the most vulnerable, including women and children at risk; women heads of households, the elderly and survivors of violence and torture. Dr. Khan will tell us about the work of KC for Refugees and how we can support their vision.
Platte Country Democratic Central Committee
The Platte County Democratic Central Committee met via Zoom on January 21st. Paula Willmarth gave a report on the State Party activities. New officers of the Missouri Democratic Party have been elected. They are:

Chair: Michael Butler - michael@missouridems.org
Vice Chair: Genevieve Williams - genevieve@missouridems.org
Treasurer: Cydney Mayfield - cydney@missouridems.org
Secretary: Manny Abarca - many@missouridems.org
General Counsel: Barbara Washington - beedub1967@msn.com
Executive Director: Lauren Gepford - info@missouridems.org
Managing Comm. Director: Andrew Storey - astorey@missouridems.org

Paula also suggested that we write letters to Chuck Schumer and Roy Blunt in support of expelling Josh Hawley for the role he played in the January 6th insurrection at the Capital. Trump’s second Impeachment trial will begin on February 9th.

The Committee discussed the importance of recruiting candidates for every office on the ballot in every election. Paula Willmarth cautioned that because the amount of support available from the Party to candidates is limited, we should be careful in what we promise to potential candidates.

Among potential candidates for the 2022 election cycles are: Lucas Kunce who has formed an exploratory committee for the 2022 Missouri Senate race and
Nicole Galloway incumbent for the Missouri State Auditor.

Guest Frank Nieto introduced himself as a potential candidate for Missouri’s 6th Congressional District seat currently held by Sam Graves. After a discussion of his interest and background, he said he would need to explore implications of such a run for his current employment as a contractor with a government agency.

Jamie Johnson is exploring the possibility of running for the Park Hill School District Board of Education. She said she has missed the deadline to file but is considering a write in campaign.

David Park has filed for Platte County Health Department Public Health Trustee in the April 6, 2021 election. For further information about David and the Platte County Health Department go to https://www.park4platte.com/newsletters.

There followed a general discussion of upcoming elections and how the Committee hopes to work with potential candidates as they explore the possibility of running. It was decided to set up separate Zoom meetings for candidates who were serious enough to form an exploratory committee. Paula Willmarth volunteered to try to set up such a meeting for Lucas Kunce. That meeting was set up for February 2nd. There were approximately 35 attendees with many non-Central Committee attendees and there was ample time to get acquainted with this very interesting candidate. This seems to be a good way to reach out to the larger community as well as to meet and greet candidates.

Please note the PCDCC hopes to provide every candidate for office with the opportunity to participate in a Central Committee meeting either via Zoom or in person when the epidemic is under control but the PCDCC does not endorse any candidate in a contested election before the relevant primary election.

Sharen Hunt expressed interest in contacting the people who appeared on the list of potential Democratic volunteers that was circulated earlier this year. The Committee approved funding for postage and printing of a postcard.

Jamie Johnson said she was interested in learning more about what offices are open for election – about where and when to file for those offices and what the cost is to file.
