Class Spotlight: 12th Grade Optics
From Nick Devinney, HS Mathematics & Science Teacher
In the 12th grade Optics main lesson, we look at a variety of optical phenomena, including illumination, shadows, reflection, and refraction. Twelfth graders are capable of imagining many different perspectives, not just their own, and optics provides many opportunities for students to imagine a literal different point of view. For example, what would an ant on the screen in the Camera Obscura experiment be able to see? How can that perspective help explain the phenomenon?
For the Camera Obscura experiment, the window was covered and a small hole cut in the covering. A screen placed in front of the hole reveals an inverted image of the scene outside.
In the Water Tank experiment, a simple fish tank full of water reveals some mind-bending observations.
By putting different coins in each corner, for example, you can see just how much reflection and refraction can do! Can you see the same silver coin eight times at once?
Thank You for Participating in the High School Social Activism Club Donation Drive for N Street Village!
Dear WWS Community,

Thank you so much for all the generous contributions to the donation drive for N Street Village! The Social Activism Club is grateful and proud to announce that we surpassed our goal of 200 items! Members of the club dropped everything off last Thursday, and the people who received the donations were very happy. We hope to do more things like this in the future and continue this particular donation drive for N Street Village next year as well.

Again, thank you so much for helping us!

Creating Safe Harbor in the Storm
Young Children and the Pandemic Environment with Liz Hagerman

Tuesday, March 8 at 8pm

We will discuss the impact of the pandemic on our children’s social and emotional well-being, and the importance of parent self-care in meeting the challenges of parenting in the pandemic. This session is part presentation and part conversation.

Zoom Info to Follow.
Day of the Languages
Next week, we will have our Day of the Languages again! The program will be held on Wednesday, March 9, from 1pm - 3pm (Snow date: March 10). During the program, grades 8-12 will perform funny skits and present a couple of filmed skits in Spanish and German. Grade 7 will decorate the hallway and auditorium for the event in the week leading up to it and will join in the audience.

While we know this is a favorite event for many parents in the school, we are very sorry that we cannot host parents or other visitors in the audience this year. Also, please be advised that your students in 8-12th MAY be a bit late for dismissal that day -- we tend to dismiss all the participants from 8th - 12th together in the auditorium after the stage strike has been completed. Thank you for your understanding!
Community Book Club
The Community Book Clubs will next meet via Zoom on Monday, March 28, 8-9 PM, to discuss Colin Whitehead's award winning novel, The Underground Railroad.

International Waldorf Community Support for Ukraine
From the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America (WECAN)

Our Ukrainian colleagues are reporting devastating attacks on their cities, schools and kindergartens are closed, children are suffering from trauma, and families are leaving their homes in fear for their life. The international Waldorf movement, including the International Association for Steiner Waldorf Early Childhood Education (IASWECE) and our colleagues in the European Council for Steiner Waldorf Education, stand in support of the families in Ukraine. Learn more about this initiative.

Summer camp at Hawthorne Valley Farm

Hawthorne Valley Farm camp offers a unique experience for children ages 8-16. They gain a reverence for the natural world, learn about caring for animals and the earth, and make lifelong memories.

There is so little opportunity in our modern, fast-paced world to gain an immersive understanding of where our food comes from, how it gets to our tables, and how to love and respect every being that made that journey possible. Spending one, two, or three weeks at farm camp can shift the awareness of a person of any age, and with that experience also comes the discovery of independence, self-confidence, and compassion.

Save Soil Movement
from Laura McCoy, WWS Parent

I am part of a global campaign to help “save our soil”. The science and data shows we have 45-50 years of agricultural soil left and the ramifications are unimaginable. The exciting part is that this can be reversed in the next 15 – 20 years! I want to share with you all about this movement and what each of us can do.

Cell Phones, Wireless and Health
From Theodora Scarato, WWS Parent

Contact WWS parent, Theodora Scarato of Environmental Health Trust for resources.
