Bishop Canevin High School | FEBRUARY 2021
|
|
From Principal Michael Joyce
|
Greetings!
In many ways our Catholic schools across the U.S. have been at the forefront of actions and responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. While we have a widely-held belief and natural sense of pride about what our schools represent, the actions of Catholic school students, families and teachers have received recognition and praise from the greater community at large (Wall Street Journal: Catholic Schools Are Beating Covid). While Catholic Schools Week is a time on the calendar dedicated annually to celebrating our schools, what we have collectively overcome and accomplished has made this year's week more meaningful and significant.
As part of our school-wide recognition ceremony, Dr. Jeffrey Suzik, Chair of the Middle States Visiting Team who evaluated Bishop Canevin this past December, delivered a taped oral report to the student body. As a school which strives to place student interests at the center of all endeavors, we believed it was important for the student body to hear what an independent evaluative body had to say about their school. The final written report is currently being edited and will be shared with our greater community upon receipt, but here are some direct quotes from the oral report:
"Bishop Canevin scored most exceptional in the following strengths; their faith forward response, their emphasis on reaching the varied needs of the students, the recent advancements which include the broadcasting studio and model classrooms, the COVID-19 response and most importantly the dynamic community."
I hope you share a sense of pride reading the notable efforts and accomplishments from our student body. The value of a Bishop Canevin education where a student-centered experience is embraced and where compassion and empathy matter is exemplified in our mission of being "Persons for Others." This important commitment will continue to resonate through everything we do.
Sincerely,
Michael Joyce
Principal

Bishop Canevin Purchases Wheelchair for Alumna
|
|
In January, the Bishop Canevin community raised over $5,000, with $2,000 from students and $3,000 from parents, faculty and alumni, for alumna Becca Barrett. Ms. Barrett has a medical condition that requires her to use a wheelchair. With the proceeds from two dress down days and an enormous response from the entire community, Bishop Canevin was able to gift Ms. Barrett her wheelchair as well as additional funds to be used for her future medical expenses. This gesture proves yet again the dynamic and powerful community that forms the backbone of Bishop Canevin.

Catholic Schools Week at Bishop Canevin High School
|
Catholic Schools Week arrived cold and snowy but with lots of spirit as students came to school in special themed dress down days. Throughout the week, Student Council featured a different scholastic theme to highlight Canevin charisms and specialties exemplified by our entire community. Every day, the Bishop Canevin broadcasting studio highlighted a faculty member who exemplified the spirit of the day and shared that with the student body. These themes were salutes to academics, service, faith, activities and the Bishop Canevin community.
In addition, Bishop Canevin held an all-school Catholic Schools Week mass on Feb. 3. It was a momentous occasion as the Bishop Canevin community celebrated the feast day of St. Blaise, received a blessing of the throat and cheered for their peers as numerous athletic and activity awards were handed out after the mass.

LaGrosse Winner of Art & Writing Contest
|
Junior Renee LaGrosse, of Gibsonia, was honored in a special way at the all-school mass on Feb. 3. Renee was recently notified as a winner of two awards given by the 2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Contest presented by the Western PA Writing Project and The University of Pittsburgh School of Education. An 11th grade honors student at Bishop Canevin, Renee won a Silver Key for her poem "No Art Lasts Forever" and an Honorable Mention for her poem "Toxic Times." Since 1921, the Awards have recognized some of America's most celebrated artists and writers while they were still teenagers, including Stephen King, Andy Warhol, and Joyce Carol Oates. Due to COVID, the Writing Project will be unable to host a regional ceremony but Renee's remarkable work was recognized by a panel of creative professionals as the most outstanding submitted among her peers. Renee received Certificates of Recognition and was invited to apply for a Scholastic Awards scholarship. Bishop Canevin High School was the only Diocesan high school named among the regional winning schools.
