Taya Wykert Tests her Horsemanship Knowledge
|
|
Thirteen-year-old Taya Wykert (Elvenstar, trainer) was up for the challenge of the USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge, and as one of the youngest participants, she didn’t let her age stand in the way. Taya also competed in the LAHJA Horsemastership Scholarship Competition, earning fourth place overall in the Level Two section.
“My trainers at Elvenstar told me about the HQC program, and I was immediately intrigued. I wanted to find out how much I already knew and what I could learn from the experience,” she noted.
Taya was determined to learn as much as she could. “I read the USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge study guide from front to back. I studied with my trainers, and they helped quiz me. There was no better way to learn than to get out there and practice in the barn. I did a lot of grooming and went over all the grooming tools. I even learned how to do standing wraps. I also went to the tack store with my trainers, and we practiced identifying bits.”
Taya was thrilled when she found out that she had qualified for HQC Nationals. “I first qualified as an alternate for nationals. It was such a surprise when I heard that I would get to participate.”
She also put her horsemanship knowledge to test in the LAHJA Horsemastership Scholarship, which challenges riders across three phases: a written phase, a hands-on phase, and a riding phase. “I really enjoyed the LAHJA hands-on phase because I learned a lot,” she explained. “During the hands-on phase, we had to identify feed, which was difficult because some of the feed looks similar.”
“It was a wonderful opportunity to participate in both the LAHJA Horsemastership Scholarship Competition and the USHJA HQC,” she added. “I am planning to compete again next year. I will do more studying, work with my trainers, and ask as many questions as I can.”

Learn More About Your Zone 10 Committee Members

Ned Glynn – Owner of Sonoma Valley Stables and Co-Chair USHJA Zone 10 Committee
Q: What is your primary area of interest/job in the sport?
I’m a horse trainer and the owner of Sonoma Valley Stables. I’m also the parent of a top junior rider.
Q: What do you see as one or two key issues for our industry, especially in Zone 10?
We need to continue raising the quality level of competitions while keeping them as affordable as possible so more people can access them.
Q: If you could accomplish one thing as a Zone 10 Committee Member, what would it be?
I would love to be a voice for the horses, owners, and riders to raise the Zone's competition level while keeping it safe and enjoyable for all. I would also like to help educate our members and promote all that USHJA has to offer, such as the EAP program.

|
Kathy Hobstetter- Owner of iJump Sports and Co-Chair USHJA Zone 10 Committee
Q: What is your primary area of interest/job in the sport?
I am part of the journalistic outreach of the sport. I would say I’m a cheerleader, and I love supporting every rider in this sport.
Q: What do you see as one or two key issues for our industry, especially in Zone 10?
While there are so many wonderful and varied programs available toward the top of the sport, one of the challenging mountains to climb in Zone 10 and throughout the nation is looking forward and assisting the building of the base of our sport. We need to be sensitive to the real needs of the base, and not just decide what we think is best for them. I think it starts by communicating with people who are just learning to ride and beginning to go to horse shows.
Q: If you could accomplish one thing as a Zone 10 Committee Member, what would it be?
My goal is to help the next generation of young people who will step into governance one day. Governance is complex, and it is up to us to educate the next generation of people who will take over this sport.

Mrs. A. C. Randolph
The annual USHJA Mrs. A. C. Randolph Owners Legacy Award was established in 2011 to acknowledge a past or current owner who has been, or is, a true patron of the hunter/jumper community through dedication and ongoing support.
Mrs. Randolph touched all parts of the horse industry. She bred and raised horses who succeeded at the racetrack, in the show ring, and in the hunt field. She was master of the Piedmont Fox Hounds for more than 40 years and instrumental in starting the Drug and Medication Program. The site of her farm hosts the Upperville Colt & Horse Show. Some of her most notable show horses were Quiet Flite, High Noon, War Dress, Army Wife, and Sky Ghost. Randolph and her horses helped such top riders as Kathy Kusner, Rodney Jenkins, and Charlie Weaver start their careers.
