March is Women’s History Month!
“Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration starting in 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” By 1987, March was designated as “Women’s History Month” with annual proclamations requested and authorized by Congress for the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.” (womenshistorymonth.gov)
How is Lexington Celebrating Women’s History Month?
“LexSeeHer is a dedicated group of volunteers, who are organizing to establish the first monument to recognize women's contributions in Lexington across time. The monument will seek to convey the important economic, social, and political impact women have had over more than three centuries. It will also raise questions about what “liberty” and “freedom” have meant to women from the 18th century to the present.” (lexseeher.com)
Join their upcoming celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2022 from 8:00 -9:00 pm! Register here.
Department Spotlight - Fire Department
Internally, we know we have work to do! We currently employ 34% women and 66% men, with 64% of the top 22 earners being male. That said, our various departments are trying to attract and retain top female talent.
This fall, our fire department sent its three female firefighters to the O2X Human Performance - Sponsored by Boston Fire. This 4 day event was covered in by the Town and was considered professional development. Paula, Stephanie and Laura enjoyed targeted programming with female-driven classes covering gear, and gender specific health issues as well as connection and camaraderie with other female officers around the state.
One take away from all three firefighters was that they feel well supported in Lexington. Many of the other attendees had to pay for their own transportation and lodging. Additionally, it was noted that our staff have access to training and equipment that other fire departments have to fight for.
While we are always learning, the Fire Department is working with Human Resources and myself to be proactive with attracting diversity within the department, and also retaining staff once they are here.
