Beware of continued 'phishing' attempts

Recently, there has been a huge influx of phishing and spam emails. To protect us (Conference office staff, churches, clergy and laity) we need to be proactive. We have sent out several communications regarding what to look for and what to do when you receive these.

Things to keep in mind:

  1. No one from the Conference office or District office will contact you regarding gift cards, sending money, or favors asking you to enter a password or email address.
  2. No one from the Conference office or District office will use an email other than their unyumc.org email.
  3. Any email received other than unyumc.org (gmail, yahoo, rr, tw, etc.) that appears to be from a Conference office or District office staff member is phishing and should be marked as spam and then deleted. This will prevent the email from getting through to you moving forward.

Please be aware of scammers attempting to get personal information from you or requesting gift cards or money via your email account. This is referred to as phishing. We have been made aware of the fact that many pastors in the UNY Conference have received such emails. A lot of these emails ask for money, gift cards, credit card numbers, etc. Many of these emails are from recognizable names, such as Bishop Webb, but if you look closely at the email address, it is not the person’s actual address.

For a quick 4 minute video on how to identify phishing please visit this site how to identify spam or phishing.

Note: Additionally, when you receive these types of emails and you identify them as phishing, please mark them as spam by right mouse clicking on the malicious email and selecting “mark as spam” and then delete the email.

What Will Your Church Look Like Post-COVID-19?

Barry Winders of the Lewis Center for Church Leadership says the COVID-19 crisis is a hinge point for the church. This pivotal time demands mission-focused leaders lest the church slip back into the busyness and non-missional activities of the pre-COVID-19 past.

There is No Such Thing as Church Revitalization

Churches in decline or in need of renewal often seek “revitalization” in an attempt to return to their former glory. But many things that initially contributed to growth, including cultural norms, socio-economic conditions, and the population in the neighborhood, no longer exist. Real renewal comes from rediscovering their mission, reengaging their mission field, and refocusing their resources to support the mission, not from trying to revive the past.

Updated COVID-19 Guidelines and Best Practices

New York State, like much of the world, is seeing a spike in COVID-19 cases with regional micro-clusters across the UNY Conference experiencing positive test rates above 4.5 percent.

With the health and safety of all members and communities of the Upper New York Conference in mind, the Conference Reopening Task Force, with the full support of Upper New York Area Resident Bishop, Mark J. Webb, and the members of the UNY Cabinet, have revised the COVID-19 guidelines. While underlying public health science and regulations have changed little since March, this revision seeks to increase clarity and ease of use.

The New York Forward requirements remain the minimum standards and are mandatory for every congregation. In addition to these requirements, the guidelines also include a set of “UNY Recommended Best Practices.” While these do not have the force of law, they are designed to further decrease the chance of infection and harm and are strongly recommended by the Bishop, the Cabinet, and the Task Force. Congregations, operating through their own “Reopening Task Force,” are responsible for making decisions about how they will keep staff, members, and visitors safe during this crisis.

The guidelines cover facility, worship, small group, food, and program hosting minimum standards and best-practices. Click here for a chart that outlines the minimum standards that churches should follow (the NYS guidelines) and the additional UNY recommend best practices. This chart also provides helpful resources.

Future updates and revisions will be noted in red in subsequent versions. If you have any questions involving these guidelines, feel free to contact the COVID-19 response team of the UNY Conference via phone at 315-898-2012 and email at covid-19response@unyumc.org.

Free recorded Hymns for the Lenten season and Easter
Two United Methodist clergy came together to record free hymns and special music for use during the Lenten season and on Easter Sunday.

The Revs. Yohan Go and Juhee Lee of the New England Conference worked with musicians to record 47 songs and make them available on Google Drive for any church that needs music to use freely.

All of those songs are from United Methodist hymnals, so any church with a CCLI license can use them for its online worship without worrying about copyright.
