Renovated Maternity Entrance Offers Warm Welcome
On January 18, Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph, Medical Center, revealed the newly renovated hospitality area inside the Maternity entrance.
Patients and visitors are greeted by a Nutrition and Dining Services team member, busy whipping up coffee, tea and milk favorites at a new coffee bar. Next to the coffee bar, the Mosaic Life Care Auxiliary Gift Shop offers a selection of snacks, including candy, nuts and pickles, as well as health-care aids and baby items.
Children can play an interactive game in a bright area adjacent to the coffee bar. A spacious area outside the nursery features comfy new chairs, Mosaic’s TunedIn TV and the chance for visitors to relax.
Through an allocation from The Children’s Endowment Fund, the Mosaic Life Care Foundation provided $250,000 to complete the remodel.

Civic Engagement Immersions: Rushville Elementary
On Feb. 5, emPowerU welcomed 24 sixth graders from Buchanan County R-IV School District's Rushville Elementary.
This was Rushville's second interaction this school year with emPowerU programming. Their participation marks a major shift in the Civic Engagement Immersions program during the pandemic as field trip opportunities since last spring have been quite limited.
Yvonne Black, sixth grade teacher at Rushville Elementary, said her students were eager to return to emPowerU for Circuit Two of the Civic Engagement Immersions.
"Students feel like they are in charge," Black said. "They are given a problem that they do see in the real world, and they figure out they can solve it themselves on their own."
In August 2020, the Foundation announced the board of trustees' commitment to offer Civic Engagement Immersions and e2 Fellowship programs free of charge through the next five years for the Foundation's 31-county service region.
Mosaic Life Care Foundation and emPowerU thank Rushville Elementary for their participation and look forward to welcoming them again in the future.

e2 Fellowship
On Feb. 2, e2 Fellowship met for its third installment of the 2020-21 program.
This session helps students explore and gain a better understanding of what challenges exist in our region and how they can influence change without a position of authority.
Lola Hofmann, a participant from East Buchanan, said she has felt very connected to the other participants and has developed lots of ideas.
"I've really enjoyed this opportunity," Hofmann said. "It gives kids pathways to do great things in the world."
e2 Fellowship is a high school intergenerational program that meets four times throughout the academic year. This year, emPowerU welcomed nine regional schools for the program.
e2 Fellowship meets March 30 for its last session which prepares participants for ethical dilemmas. Schools participating include: Albany R-III, Bishop LeBlond High School, East Buchanan C-I, Jefferson C-123, Northeast Nodaway R-V, Riverside USD 114, South Holt R-I, St. Joseph Christian and Troy Unified School District.

Six students attended from King City Schools and four participants traveled from Albany R-III.
The Gifted Consortium will meet again March 3.

Nursing Fellowship: Laying the Foundation
Kourtney Chaney has always pictured herself working in a healthcare field. She graduates from Missouri Western State University May 2021 with a Bachelor of Science Nursing degree. Kourtney was first introduced to Mosaic in 2011 and is now a nurse apprentice. She is no stranger to Mosaic and will continue her commitment as a 2020 Nursing Fellowship recipient.
The Nursing Fellowship is a result of the Foundation and hospital leadership working to attract new and innovative ideas into the community. The program helps lay the foundation for a successful nursing career. Kourtney wants to ensure patients from the region know they are in the best hands possible while she is their nurse.
"I am most excited to give back to people within our community," Kourtney said. "I will be their advocate and I will provide holistic measures to ensure they are nursed back to health."
The Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2021-2022 Nursing Fellowship. Missouri Western State University, Northwest Missouri State University and Benedictine College BSN students are eligible to apply.
Following graduation and successful obtainment of a valid nursing license to practice in the state of Missouri, each Mosaic Life Care Foundation Nursing Fellow agrees to a three-year commitment with Mosaic Life Care.
Online applications are due April 1.
