HOUSING

The Department of Housing and Urban Development defines affordable housing as any housing unit that costs less than 30% of the area median income. This means it changes from city to city. Data published by the Bellingham and Whatcom County Housing Authority shows 635 new residential units permitted last year. Yet, none of those were designated as affordable housing, said Brien Thane, executive director of Bellingham Housing Authority.

The median price for houses and condominiums sold in July by local real estate agents was $525,000, according to the latest data from the Northwest Multiple Listing Service. That’s $102,500 more than last July’s median price of $422,500 and a 24% price increase.

September 14 Community Meeting

We had hoped to return to our in-person meetings in September, but with the advance of the Covid Delta variant infections, we have decided to continue meeting remotely to keep us all safe.

Topic: Housing
Why is affordable housing so hard to find? How will young people ever enter the housing market? Why aren't there enough homes for people to afford to rent or buy?

We will have a panel of people who can speak to these issues.

The Annual Cordata Neighborhood Block Party is back this year and better than ever! Cordata Church is inviting all our neighbors and friends to this once-a-year, end-of-summer classic. We're cooking up great food including chicken and veggie kabobs, summer salads, fruit, and delicious dessert. A live band will be playing fun, family-friendly music for the first hour. There will be a bouncy house for children and lawn games for children and children at heart. As this will be an outdoor event, masks will be optional (or in accordance with local regulations day of) and a fun way to hang out with neighbors that you know or meet new neighbors. Join us on Sunday, August 22 from 12-2pm at Cordata Church located at 400 Meadowbrook Court. For more information or day of updates, please visit cordatachurch.org/BlockParty. We'll see you there in your best summer gear!
A BAD DAY FOR SOME OF OUR
HEALTH WORKERS

the following text was excerpted from a Reddit post a few days ago:
Our local Bellingham hospital workers are having a very hard time today. "We were protested at the hospital today by a large anti-vaccination crowd. We have 7 Covid patients on life support and 26 in house. They are all un-vaccinated. Many of them are demanding treatment that is not science based, and stressing out out their care team with language calling their diagnosis a hoax. The morale at the hospital amongst the staff is awful. I’m emailing you cuz maybe your connections could think of a way to cheer us up. In 36 years in the trenches (I worked through the AIDS crisis) I’ve never seen moral so low as today. It was just so hurtful." ~ Discouraged and Fatigued
A follow up message said: “I think what we need here is to feel some community love. I like the idea of cards or signs or (responsible) cheer leading at shift change or along those lines….. but all great ideas. Also, a loud shout out that you all support vaccines and the vaccine policy mandating all employees be vaccinated or lose their job.”
You can include gift cards for restaurant take-out, groceries, or coffee if you can afford it.

CORDATA NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Annie Vekved:
"I was honesty surprised that I got a scholarship in the first! I will put this scholarship to good use when I go to Whatcom in the fall. Thank you!

Neila Vicente:
"I was very excited when I received the email that I was awarded this scholarship. The first person I told about receiving this scholarship was my little brother. He didn't have the same type of excitement I had but he was happy for me. At the time when I was filling out the application, I felt overwhelmed and just wanted to get the paperwork over with. But in the end, it was all worth it. It was worth feeling the excitement and joyfulness when I was
reading the email. It was worth it seeing my parent's reaction when I told them I got this
scholarship. I am very thankful and honored to receive this scholarship."
