The New Year
Our office is here to support you during this critical time. You are inherently wonderful at rising to the occasion and doing what needs to be done in all mission areas. At present we need to focus on the clinical mission to get us through this surge. Thanks to those of you who have stepped up to provide vaccine guidance in our communities and to protect the kids. Thanks to Dr. Noemi Spinazzi from Primary Care for submitting this information on 5-11 y/o vaccination and the latest data on vaccine safety:
https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm705152a1.htm
We are hoping this is one last push on vaccines boosters and managing illness. Hang in there. We will peak this month and it looks like hospital capacity will not necessarily be overwhelming. The vaccines are working to decrease hospitalization and death. I am so impressed by the efforts of so many to keep us safe. This surge is touching all of us both personally and professionally. We will see it through.
Congratulations to the pediatric residents who matched for fellowship. It is quite an impressive slate!

CMO Updates:
I would like to welcome the following new medical directors and publicly thank them for their willingness to step up to leadership during this critical time:
Amit Gupta- Cardiac Anesthesia
Jason Jagodzinski - Perioperative Surgery
Julee Dalton - Perioperative Anesthesia
Prachi Singh - COVID Therapeutics
New Booster Requirement 21-27.1:
CDPH AFL revision notifies all facilities and requires health care personnel ( HCP) in hospital settings to be up to date with vaccinations and receive boosters by February 1, 2022, unless exempt. This revision also requires at least twice weekly COVID-19 testing for all unvaccinated exempt HCP and booster-eligible HCP who have not yet received their booster in acute health care settings.
Procedural Update:
-
We held on adding additional elective cases from January 4-21 at main campus ORs
- At this point we are continuing operations for Walnut Creek.
- We are reviewing existing schedule especially when admissions are anticipated following the procedure and we are constrained by available beds.
- This is a very fluid situation due to the Omicron surge and we will communicate in coordination with the perioperative team as we move forward.
Daily Screener:
Please encourage all to use the daily screener. It will direct individuals in next steps in the event of exposure or symptoms. It also provides back-to-work guidance and guidance for continuing to work with testing following exposure.
Voluntary COLOR post-holiday testing:
Kits are available at the front desk for a recommended post-holiday screen Day 1 back to work and Day 3-5.
N95 and PPE:
HCP should wear eye protection for all direct patient care.
HCP are strongly recommended to wear an N95 for all direct patient care.
PPE re-use and extended use will be reinstated.
Continued Guidance:
Requirement is to wear a fit-tested N95 or PAPR for novel respiratory in addition to eye protection, gown, gloves, and airborne isolation. Under all other circumstances, healthcare personnel can use an N95 if preferred.
Be well and let's get through this in 2022,
Kelley

UCSF Mid-Career Development Program for Research Faculty - Deadline February 7th
Dear colleagues:
We are pleased to announce the second call for applications for the UCSF Mid-Career Development Program for Research Faculty. This unique program is intended to promote workforce equity at UCSF.
Given the lack of women and underrepresented minority (URM) faculty who focus on research and are at Associate or Full rank at UCSF and nationally, the main goal of this program is to provide career mentorship and sponsorship to research faculty who are women or historically marginalized.
During this review cycle, we will select up to three faculty members for this two-year award. Selection criteria, application components and timeline, and program components are outlined below. All candidates who meet these criteria are encouraged to apply. We strongly encourage URM women research faculty to apply.
Please email Claudine Catledge (claudine.catledge@ucsf.edu) with any questions or for more details.
Sincerely,
Talmadge E. King, Jr., MD

The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo at henry.ocampo@ucsf.edu, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.

BCH DEI/AR COUNCIL UPDATES
| |
The DEI/AR Council is proud to present our second annual Action Plan for Advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism for the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals in FY2022. This strategic plan was created collaboratively by the BCH DEI/AR Council, Senior Leadership, Executive Leadership, and the Board of Directors. Moving forward, the work must continue to be collaborative since we know that the impacts of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism occur at individual, institutional and systemic levels.

Please join us in congratulating the recipients of the inaugural BCH DEI/AR Awards. The goal of the BCH DEI/AR Awards is to implement DEI/AR projects that bring intention, thoughtfulness, and a structured approach to achieve equity and inclusion. Teams across BCH had communicated the need for additional infrastructure where DEI/AR-related efforts could be scaled and maximized across the entire organization.
Funding for the DEI/AR Awards was provided by Jamie Phillips, Chief Operating Officer and Dr. Bryan King, Vice-President Child Behavioral Health Services. Additional information on the DEI/AR Awards can be found HERE.

TEMPORARY HOLD: Category 3 on-site clinical research - effective January 3, 2022
Dear Clinical Research Community,
The COVID-19 omicron variant is causing an unprecedented increase in cases around the world. As our own UCSF data demonstrate, and as reflected by the San Francisco Department of Public Health and surrounding county epidemiology, the Bay Area is in the midst of a major surge. This surge is expected to be shorter than the ones caused by the delta variant and previous strains, but there will be a very high risk for infection to our faculty, staff, trainees, patients, and research participants over the next few weeks.
After careful consideration, UCSF will temporarily reinstitute a hold on Category 3 on-site clinical research (i.e., research not essential to the health and well-being of participants) effective January 3. Please click here for additional definitions of Category 3 on-site clinical research and more specifics regarding UCSF’s on-site research policy. We anticipate this change lasting for approximately two weeks; the actual duration will depend on the course of the pandemic. This decision was made to achieve two fundamental goals: protecting the health of our patients, research participants, faculty, staff, and trainees; and preserving our clinical workforce to care for the anticipated surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations.
We recognize the impact this decision will have on our research activities. We will continue to follow the pandemic closely and communicate regularly regarding how best to balance UCSF’s research mission with the public health of our community. Please let us know at research@ucsf.edu if you have questions or concerns regarding this change.
Sincerely,
Daniel H. Lowenstein, MD
