Happy National Black Child Development Week!

All week, look out for this daily NBCDW newsletter. Don't miss chances to win giveaways of children's books, music CDs and other resources to support young children's creative development.

Here's our communications agenda:
  • Monday: NBCDW 2021 Kickoff
  • Tuesday: Infants & the Arts
  • Wednesday: Toddlers & the Arts
  • Thursday: Preschoolers & the Arts
  • Friday: School-agers & the Arts
Daily Tip: Creative Development & Culture

Creative development is the process of developing creative abilities through exploration, decision making and expression. In early childhood education, we promote children's regular engagement in the following experiences to develop creativity:
  • Creative Movement and Dance
  • Visual Arts
  • Music
  • Drama

It's important to avoid forcing any one form of art on young children. Provide opportunities for them to explore all developmentally appropriate art forms and genres. This best practice incorporates cultural responsiveness and enables each child to discover their individual talents, preferences and abilities.

Creative Development Experiences

Following the read-aloud of The Undefeated...

  • Engage children in reviewing the historic figures, their talents and societal contributions.

  • Encourage children to exhibit their own talents through role play, Show-and-tell, a talent show, an art exhibit, or other means of self-expression, based on individual preference. Just remember to keep the experiences open-ended.

  • Please send any pictures or videos you'd like to share to [email protected]. Just type NBCDW 2021 in the subject line and include a description of your photo(s) or video(s) in the body of the email. We'll send a special package of goodies to anyone who shares their NBCDW media footage with us.
