SaskCulture’s 2023 Annual General Meeting and Member Consultation Session took place in person on June 16, 2023, at the Regina Conexus Arts Centre.
The SaskCulture membership welcomed Joanne McDonald, Yvonne Hotzak, Christine Ruys and Candice Evans-Waite to the SaskCulture Board as new Directors. SaskCulture would also like to thank Rowena Materne, who ended her term this year, for her contributions and dedication to supporting SaskCulture and culture in Saskatchewan as part of the Board. Sask. artist contributes to new toonie design for National Indigenous Peoples Day | Megan Currie, from English River First Nation in Saskatchewan, is one of three artists who created a Royal Canadian Mint coin commemorating National Indigenous Peoples Day. The design combines the artists’ expressions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis art, cultures, and traditions. The other two artists are Jennine Krauchi, a Winnipeg Métis artist, and Myrna Pokiak, Inuvialuk from Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories. Read more | Call for participants: Non-profit Corporations Act survey | A project by the University of Saskatchewan that explores board governance policies and practices is inviting non-profit organizations' leaders to participate in a short survey. The project seeks to explore the legislation and regulations encompassed under the Saskatchewan Non-Profit Corporations Act, the strengths and shortcomings of current governance practices, emerging trends within non-profit governance, as well as various structures and practices with the potential to improve the governance function in the sector significantly. New award aims to recognize unsung heroes |
The inaugural Jim Brady Memorial Award recognized 14 individuals for their humanitarian and cultural work. The recipients from Saskatchewan include Tristan Durocher, David Garneau, Leah Dorion, Donny Parenteau and Maria Campbell.
The award was created in honour of the Métis leader who educated and mobilized Métis communities on the rights of individuals living on Crown lands. Read more

Museum partnership receives merit award |
The Western Development Museum (WDM) and Whitecap Dakota First Nation (WDFN) received an award this June for their co-curated exhibit: Wapaha Sk̄a Oyate: Living Our Culture, Sharing Our Community at Pion-Era, 1955-69. The two partners highlighted that their partnership is an example of working together in the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation.
The exhibit won the Award of Merit from the Museums Association of Saskatchewan for raising awareness, promoting, and advancing the Saskatchewan museum sector. Read more
