SPARK Lesson: "Teaching and Healing"
This Sunday, Jenni Payne will read Mark 1:21-28 from the SPARK Story Bible. Be sure to have yours with you and follow along with her! We will hear about one of the first times Jesus casts out a demon in the Gospel of Mark. This might sound a bit scary but have no fear! Through Jesus we learn that the Holy Spirit can overcome anything and is alive in each of us, guiding us, and healing our hearts. Our God (three in one: God, Jesus, Holy Spirit) is all about love, grace, and healing!
Nursery Nuggets
Hi Nursery Buddies and Parents!

I hope you have been enjoying the snow! Some of the days this past week have been beautiful! Our lesson last week was on joy. This week, we will focus on something else that keeps our joy in Jesus: love. This is important, right? To love God, our adults, neighbors, and ourselves. I think God’s love makes joy a little bit easier to hold on to. There are four different kinds of love that are talked about in the Bible (they are Greek words so stay with me). They are:

  • Storge (Affection)
  • Philia (Friendship)
  • Eros (Romantic)
  • Agape (Unconditional Love).

Which one sounds like love God gives us? (Agape)
Which one sounds like a love we do not understand yet? (Eros)

This month, we are going to focus our efforts on Philia. Has anyone watched the Narnia movies or read the books? They are some of my favorite stories. The movies are on Disney+ or you can borrow them from me because they are so good! The author of those books, C.S. Lewis, has the idea that friendship is likely the kind of love that is the closest resemblance to Heaven. We can all use a little Heaven on Earth.

Activity: Here is a picture of a “friendasaurus” to color. After you are done coloring the dinosaur, then write some ways that this dinosaur is a good friend.

I admit it! I am a bad Minnesotan. I hate cold and snow, I hate the dark, I consider Palm Springs to be a good winter vacation, and January something to be tolerated rather than reveled in. Despite this, I do see two redeeming qualities about January. One is the reality that we are now on the upswing from the winter solstice and our days are getting longer, even though this is sometimes hard to perceive. Two, I like those brilliantly cold days with absolutely no cloud cover, when the sun is so intense; she is obviously doing her best to bring warmth and light back to Minnesota.

For this reason, I feel like those of us in Minnesota, and other comparably northern climates, have a special understanding of the metaphor Jesus, the Light of the World. That light in the best of times can seem to be in short supply. What if Christ is calling us to be the light? Take a listen!

Rise, shine, you people! Christ, the Lord has entered.
Our human story, God in him, is centered.
He comes to us by death and sin surrounded, with grace unbounded.

In late January 2021, with the light of a COVID-19 vaccine breaking on the horizon, it’s a compelling call, isn’t it!
