A Community Member's Future in Food - Workforce Development Success Story:
A community member was referred to a former Hatchery resident internship through Breakthrough Ministries. They recently graduated from the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s program called Chicago’s Community Kitchens. When they interviewed for the Culinary Internship at the company, they had a zest for life and the culinary field; this was something the company was looking for as this was the first time they were bringing non-family into their new store front in Austin. Since this was the company’s first time hiring someone they requested potential interns have a background check done since the intern would be handling cash.
Although the community member has a criminal record for drug possession, they were open and honest about what happened a few years ago. Since that time, they have been on the right path towards recovery. This was a great learning opportunity for all involved to learn from those who have been involved in the criminal justice system and how one opportunity can change a person’s trajectory. The community member has received supportive services paid through our PepsiCo Foundation Grant Program and is currently enrolled to take the Starting a Food Business webinar in November at The Hatchery Chicago as their goal is to own and operate their own food business in the future.
