It was a fearful time.

On March 4th, 1933 Franklin D. Roosevelt stood in front of America as their new leader. Fear filled the air like morning fog fills San Francisco’s bay. It was the Great Depression and a new president was going to speak to a frightened nation. Everyone was waiting with bated breath. Some were present at the nation's proud capital, but most were huddled around their radios in their humble homes. What could a leader say in such a hopeless situation? What would the new President say? President Roosevelt stood confidently at his platform and declared that famous phrase,

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself…”

The speech was inspirational no doubt, but fear is not the only thing to fear according to God’s Word. Our Lord tells us to have no other gods before him.

A wise man fears the Lord.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. - Proverbs 9:10

A wise world fears the Lord.

Let all the earth fear the LORD. - Psalm 33:8

The first commandment from our Lord is this. Have no other gods. Luther describes the meaning of the first commandment saying, “we should fear, love, and trust God above all things.”

The presence of our Lord strikes fear into the hearts of men. Throughout scripture those in the presence of the Lord are terrified. His glory is so wonderful, so terrifying that our language doesn’t have words to describe it. On that chilly night, outside of Bethlehem, shepherds were doing what they always did, they were tending their flock. When suddenly...

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. - Luke 2:9 (emphasis by me)

When the glory of the Lord shone around those angels, hovering over those shepherds, their rods probably fell out of their calloused hands. “They were terrified.”

Perhaps you are terrified too. Sickness, disease, financial ruin, children's safety, crime, natural disasters, they all make you shiver. Apart from Christ, you have lots to fear . . . especially death. Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy.”

But that wasn’t the end of Jesus’ speech. With Christ you have NOTHING to fear, not even death! Jesus continued … “I come that they may have life and have it abundantly.” In God's perfect timing, He sent His son to save His people from their sins and that includes you.

President Roosevelt’s speech was great, but the angel’s was better…

“Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”

Thanks be to God!

Join us Sunday as we continue our Advent sermon series titled God's Perfect Timing- Fearful Times. God's timing is not always our timing, but His timing is always perfect.

I can’t wait!
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

A message from Nicole Atencio...

Young Life is a youth ministry that has been in the valley for 13 years. Our mission is to introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith. Our hope is to give EVHS students from all walks of life the chance to know Jesus through Club, Campaigners, and Camp. We meet every Wednesday night, alternating between Club and Campaigners.

YL Club

Young Life Club is the larger group with fun events every week like mud volleyball, line dancing, capture the flag, skits, and more. This is a safe, relaxed, and non-threatening environment where kids can laugh, feel valued, and hear the Gospel. I encourage our youth at Grace Fellowship to come to YL Club and invite their friends who may have never had a chance to know Jesus.

YL Campaigners

Young Life Campaigners is a smaller, focused, and more intentional group where young people come together with the leaders to learn more about what it means to love and follow Jesus. We go deep into the word, discuss life and life with Jesus.

A place to give and a place to receive

The local community market is working to improve healthy food access in our community by rescuing food from local grocery stores, local farmers and redistributing it to any and all local families. In this way, they're reducing food waste while also making good food more accessible.

This outreach opportunity gives our church the chance to actively show the love of Jesus just up the road and in our community at large!

🍎What do our wonderful Market Assistant volunteers take care of?
Stocking the market and produce shelves, unloading and sorting grocery rescue donations, repackaging bulk food items, packing dry food boxes for community distribution, sorting produce boxes, composting food and recycling containers, sweeping, and sanitizing surfaces along with many other jobs within the shifts that can be of help.
