EHS Safety Event Welcomes Research Community
EHS is holding a gala Lab Safety Homecoming event at McDonnell Hall on Oct. 26 from 10am to 2 pm. The celebration features games, prizes, vendors, a catered lunch and talk by lab safety expert Mary Beth Mulcahy.
Mary Beth Mulcahy will be joining us virtually at noon in A01 McDonnell Hall. Mulcahy is editor-in-chief of ACS Chemical Health and Safety and for nine years was an investigator with the US Chemical Safety Board (CSB).

At the CSB, Mulcahy investigated the root causes of major chemical accidents including the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the 2010 lab explosion at Texas Tech.
The "homecoming" theme recognizes the time of year as well as Princeton's welcoming back researchers to full-time, in-person activities. Be sure not to miss the crowning of this year's Dale Grieb Safety Award winner and earn a cool Princeton-themed T-shirt by visiting all of the exhibit tables. Also, meet Coach, a service dog for first responders and the newest member of the Princeton Public Safety team!

EHS Anniversary Reunion
Princeton University EHS celebrated its 50th Anniversary on Sept. 30. It was on this day that the Office of Occupational Health and Safety was formally established in 1971 under founding director Jack Faust.

To mark the occasion, we invited former staff members to gather virtually. There was much merriment and story swapping as health and safety veterans recalled radiation spills, bugs (literally) in the equipment and the discovery of what was initially thought to be a bomb in an old basement! (More on these stories in a future edition.)
Fifteen former Princeton EHS staffers joined current employees for a virtual reunion event.
A Year of Celebration

The staff reunion kicks off a year of celebration that includes staff profiles, stories and events.

Our celebratory website will launch soon—dedicated to EHS history, stories and profiles. Be sure to follow us on social media for more information and special content.

EHS Staff Profiles
As part of our anniversary celebration, EHS will be profiling our entire staff over the course of this academic year. We kick off by profiling the Campus Safety team. Click below or on the image at right to watch a fun introductory video.

EHS Departmental News
In June, AVP of Environmental Health and Safety Robin Izzo, was made an honorary member of the Class of 2021. The selection recognizes those who have left a particularly profound impact on a class.

Robin was recognized for her "tireless work in ensuring that the class could safety spend its final year at Old Nassau...we are so appreciative of Robin's efforts on our behalf. We are honored to call her a classmate."

In July, Senior Laboratory Safety Specialist Meagan Fitzpatrick was elected president of CSHEMA, a national organization serving EHS professionals, during the association's annual conference.

Equally memorable was Meagan's turn as judge in the "yappy hour" pet show, which featured her dog Hunter among a menagerie of furry and non-furry friends (read: there were snakes).
Also representing Princeton EHS at the CSHEMA conference was Associate Director for Laboratory and Research Safety Steve Elwood, who presented on the ServiceNow platform and co-hosted with Meagan a session on co-funding EHS roles.
EHS and the Office of Community and Regional Affairs recently donated $44,000 worth of PPE supplies to Trenton Health— including 40 cases of disinfectant wipes and 200 cases of nitrile gloves.

On hand for the Sept. 15 delivery were Ryan Carney, Senior Safety Specialist, and Kelly States, Associate Director, Campus Safety and EHS Operations.
Robin Izzo was recognized as a Hometown Hero at the Princeton-Columbia football game on Oct. 2. The event honored those in our local community who have served on the frontlines over the last 20 months of the pandemic.

Standing on Powers Field with the other honorees, Izzo was presented with a football signed by Princeton coach Bob Surace and introduced to the crowd as "incident commander for the University’s COVID-19 response."
