Being Pro-Life Amid the Violence
We all rejoiced as the SCOTUS returned the legislative
responsibilities regarding abortion back to the states, but just as quickly our nation was shocked by violence again. The July 4th murder of seven people in Highland Park, Illinois by a 21 year-old who should have never had access to a firearm shocked us all. In Akron, Ohio, Jayland Walker was killed by police after fleeing a traffic stop. The coroner reported 60 bullet wounds in his body, and regardless of why he fled we can all agree that this was beyond excessive.
We already have laws in place that should have stopped that shooter, but loopholes abound. I don’t know why Jayland Walker felt like he had to run, nor why the police reacted as they did, but there has to be a better way.
Being pro-life is not just about the babies. As children of God’s Kingdom we join with Rachel as she is weeping for her children. We need to weep with those who are mourning, and we need to cry out for those who have been mistreated. We have learned that legislation and protocols do not change human hearts. Let us pray for the promise tied to Rachel’s weeping, the next verses in Jeremiah 31:16-17
Thus says the LORD: "Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work, declares the LORD, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy. There is hope for your future, declares the LORD, and your children shall come back to their own country.
