Good Evening York Academy Families:
Thank you to everyone who came to last week's Trunk or Treat Literacy Night! It was a fun time for all, and we are thankful for the partnership and support of the York Academy PTO and the many volunteers who made it happen. This includes Assistant Head of the Lower School, Ms. Sipe, who spearheaded the event. We also turned this exciting event into a Title 1 Literacy Night by handing out free books to all of our ghouls and goblins. There were many great trunk displays, and I'm pleased to announce that the Upper School House Council took first place with their creative castle design. Good job, Knights! Click here to view pictures from the event.

In celebration of National School Principals Month, I will be highlighting our Assistant Heads of School this week and next week. We are very fortunate at York Academy to have such outstanding leadership at both buildings.
Today, we'll focus on Dr. Jeremy Overlander, who has worked for the York Academy over the past three years. He started as the Assistant Head at the Upper School and has also worked at the Lower School in the same capacity. This year he returned to the Upper School and has taken on some major projects, including scheduling and designing the evaluation forms. These projects are in addition to the other responsibilities listed for our administrative leaders at York Academy. When you see Dr. Overlander this week let him know the reason you appreciate the valuable work he does at the Upper School.
Thanks and enjoy your evening,
Dr. Michael Lowe

Knight Nod Achiever: Ja'zelle Stokes
It's important to balance the different aspects of our lives—intellectual, physical, and emotional—so that we can achieve well-being for ourselves and others. As IB learners (and parents), we must recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.
Ja'zelle is a shining example of what it means to be balanced! She works diligently on maintaining her school work, while also balancing her social life and extra curriculars (Model UN and FBLA)! Ja'zelle strives to display this attribute in every situation - from balancing a math problem, to staying impartial during a friend's conflict, to finding the right tone or wording for her debates, she thoroughly exemplifies what it means to be balanced.
Here's a big "Knight Nod" for balancing your schoolwork and activities so well, Ja'zelle. We're very proud of you!

Lower School Students of the Month Are Open-Minded
We're thrilled to announce the Lower School Students of the Month from September! These students displayed the IB Learner Profile Attribute of being open-minded. They were recognized because they understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are also accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience. Congrats, Knights. Way to go!

From the School Counselors
The Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS) is an anonymous, confidential survey of students in 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grades, which is held every two years. It will be administered at York Academy on November 2. PAYS asks questions of students regarding their perspectives about their school environment, as well as attitudes, knowledge and behaviors concerning alcohol, tobacco, drugs, violence, depression, and other concerns. The survey looks to identify both risk and protective factors that impact students. PAYS serves to gather school, local and state data and information needed to select appropriate prevention and intervention programs to address such problems as alcohol, tobacco, other drug use, and violence in our schools and communities. Again, this survey is completely anonymous, and the data is not tied to specific students. If you have questions about your child's participation, please contact their school counselor after reading these FAQs and the passive parental consent form. Thank you!
