SCOUTING MINISTRIES SUNDAY

February 14, 2021

A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind,
Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.

The United Methodist Church recognizes Scout Sunday on the second Sunday in February each year. LaGrange First Methodist has sponsored Boy Scout Troop 21 since 1927 almost 100 years! With your assistance, Troop 21 has shared the goals of Scouting by reinforcing (and in some cases instilling) the values of a faith to God, citizenship, family and friends, character, and the love of our nation’s natural resources while developing mental and physical skills. Many of these goals are accomplished through a strong outdoor program that creates opportunities for the members of Troop 21 to participate in camping opportunities throughout the year.

Cub Scouts Pack 21 has been a part of LaGrange First Methodist since 1979. Our pack is composed of Lions (kindergarteners), Tigers (first graders), Wolves (second graders), Bears (third graders) and Webelos (fourth and fifth graders). Our pack participates in hikes, family campouts, Raingutter Regatta, Pinewood Derby, service projects as well as other activities throughout the year.

Mission of the Month: Soup Kitchen

Judging from the number of quarts of soup sold at last Sunday's "SOUP-er Bowl" fundraiser, we imagine either your bellies or your freezers are full! Thanks to the hard work of Rick Free and his dream team of volunteers (Mary Ellen Taylor, Trish Smith, Laura Shedd, Dorothy Cammon, Gail Dacus, Jerry and Kay Clement, Bill and Libba Bowling, and Murray Shine), you all bought 430 quarts of homemade soup to help fund the LaGrange First Methodist Soup Kitchen.

Between Monday’s hot meal, Wednesday’s sack lunches, and the addition of Second Saturday meals, the soup kitchen served 4,100 meals in 2020! While many service ministries were forced to stop or reduce their outreach during COVID-19, the Soup Kitchen never missed a beat, safely serving others in the midst of challenging circumstances and expanding their services in 2020.

In addition to buying soup, so many of you have been generous in giving financial donations to our Mission of the Month as well. Thank you, thank you! This ministry would not be possible without the volunteer and financial support of the congregation. While the Soup Kitchen normally counts on income from Food Service Operations to help offset a portion of the funding for this ministry, normal operations haven’t been possible since March 2020.

You can continue supporting the Soup Kitchen, our February Mission of the Month, by writing a check to the church with “missions” or “soup kitchen” in the memo line. You also can give online at lagrangefumc.org/online-giving and designate your gift to “missions” through the end of February.
