November 2021
Mavs Run Together!
Hello Maverick families!
Heading into November, we often think of things we are thankful for around us as we should. Most of us are blessed to have the support of family and friends, a warm roof over our heads, clothes on our backs and pantries filled with food. However, there are families in our community that need us. This month MSIS is focusing on our Keeping it FRESH trait of Empathy. Helping our students feel with their hearts and see with their eyes the needs of others. From the Caring Hearts’ Food Drive and Kindness Clubs to our classroom counselor lessons, we will be helping our students step inside someone else's shoes and imagine what they are going through. Through modeling kindness and empathy with our students, we hope to continue growing a community who not only cares, but understands about those around us. I challenge each of you this month to step out and give back to someone who is in need. Maybe it is as simple as holding the door open for a young mother and her child or helping out a senior citizen around the yard or donating to the nearby homeless shelter. My kids will often tell me one of their favorite family memories growing up involves giving back to the community around us as a family.

Principal's Lunch Bunch
Once a month, I meet with students to gather their hopes, dreams, and wishes for Maize South Intermediate. Teachers select one student each month that would like to come together and eat lunch with me as a leadership team. I look forward to this time each month with students. This month, our students shared some of the things they love the most about our school are their teachers, making new friends, and spending time in the collaboration spaces. We will continue to meet and collect feedback from these amazing students!

Flu Season:
Flu season is upon us. Get your flu vaccine now! Vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months and older. Symptoms of the flu can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache chills, and fatigue. Some people with the flu will not have a fever.

Washing your hands often is the best defense against the flu!!

Please keep your child home from school for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone without the help of fever-reducing medication. A fever is defined at 100 degrees or higher. Your physician can recommend safe ways to treat symptoms of the flu.

Medications:
If your child needs to take any medication at school, a consent form must be filled out every school year before any medication is administered at school. You can find this form on the USD266 website by clicking here and clicking Authorization for Medication. If this medication is prescribed by a physician, I need their signature as well in order to administer.

Please feel free to contact me by stopping by my office, calling, or emailing me if you have any questions or concerns about your student. I am thankful to be here serving you, our students and the staff here at MSIS! Have a safe, healthy, and happy Thanksgiving!

Mavs and the Media Center
We have been very busy in the library this past month. All classes have been learning about and discussing online safety and how to be a good digital citizen. Additionally, we have learned about what is in our district's Acceptable Use Policy that every parent/guardian signs on behalf of their child during enrollment. The students have had some great questions and good discussion has been had about all of these topics.

Additionally, we are loving our books! Battle of the Books is in full swing. We have 60+ students officially signed up to participate. Each student must read 6 books from a list of 10 by January 31st. We look forward to battling it out in early spring!

Thank you for partnering with us as we encourage a love of reading!

This month’s lesson will be over considering different perspectives and having empathy for each other. Here is a link to a great video by Brene Brown explaining empathy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Evwgu369Jw. We are also excited to finally get our groups started this month. We are starting with a boys group and girls group. These groups focus on self-confidence, peer relationships and leadership skills. If you think your student may be a good candidate for one of our groups please reach out to us at chamilton@usd266.com or tslattery@usd266.com.
