Local Action Update
Portsmouth Joins Power A Clean Future Ohio
We are thrilled to announce that Portsmouth has joined Power A Clean Future Ohio after their City Council unanimously passed the resolution on May 10. This makes Portsmouth the 14th community to join our growing coalition of leading cities across Ohio. The first priority is to work on identifying opportunities for city government to track and improve government energy use to create better efficiencies, cost savings and ultimately lower emissions.

Councilman Sean Dunne sponsored the resolution to join PCFO and has been a leading voice on council on these issues. Councilman Dunne said, “Last year, Portsmouth was named an All-American City by the National Civic League–one of ten chosen across the country. It was an effort I was proud to work on and in doing so we as a community demonstrated that in the face of any challenge our city knows how to come together and lead the way in creating a home we’re proud of. I am excited for the work ahead with Power a Clean Future Ohio to identify opportunities that our city can seize to build a better economy that protects our environment, saves residents on their electric bills, and plants the seeds for clean energy job creation in the region.”

This announcement is an exciting moment for the City of Portsmouth and its residents. The City Council’s leadership will help propel the city forward to embrace an emerging 21st century economy powered by clean energy and clean transportation. In doing this work together, our aim will be to save the city and taxpayer money, while preserving the environment and fostering new job opportunities. Welcome, Portsmouth!

PCFO Community Spotlight: Dayton joins SOPEC for Electric Aggregation
On May 26, the Dayton City Commission approved a plan to establish a new, green energy based electric aggregation plan.

The city is joining the Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council (SOPEC) to procure energy for use in Dayton, all from 100% renewable sources, adding them to a distinguished list of Ohio cities that have taken that step.

Relaunching community choice aggregation was a recommendation in their "Strategy for a Sustainable Dayton," a comprehensive sustainability roadmap adopted in August 2020.

PCFO applauds the City of Dayton for their initiative to be a leader in the movement toward clean energy, and we are excited to see how Dayton will continue to be proactive in reducing their carbon emissions in the future.

Officials break ground on Cincinnati’s massive new solar array project
A field that was used to grow soybeans and corn in southwest Ohio is now the new site for the largest municipal solar array in the country. On May 13, around 40 Cincinnati leaders and partners broke ground and celebrated the new installment of clean energy in Highland County, Ohio.

This 5-year plan in the making will generate 203,000 megawatt-hours of energy per year, which is enough to power 100% of Cincinnati’s electricity consumption for all city-owned and operated services. It will also provide about 25% of the power to 80,000 homes that have opted-in to get renewable energy.

“There’s been a history in the Midwest, and Ohio, of people taking our resources and not leaving much for us,” Cranley said during the conference. “We owe it to our kids and grandkids to move to a cleaner future.”

This $125 million project is funded through a power-purchasing agreement which will save the city approx. $1.8 million over their 20-year contract, and is estimated to bring at least 160 construction jobs to the area.

This year, we are supporting Portsmouth’s aggregation ballot initiative for 100% clean energy and are looking to support several other Ohio cities over the next year that are interested in doing the same.
