Housing Market Report for Third Quarter
|
Are you wondering what happening in our local housing market? You may have heard that the residential real estate market was fast paced, that was true for last fall through this summer. Homes are still selling fast but the buying frenzy, like the weather, has cooled.
If you are a buyer, you will still want to decide about a property quickly, noted Gwen Eskridge, president of Mid-Shore Board of Realtors. Homes in the third quarter of 2021 are selling in Caroline County in 20 days, Dorchester County in 41 days, Queen Anne’s County in 24 days and in Talbot County in 30 days. At one point, homes were selling in just a couple of days. By working with a Realtor, they will help you identify what is available and how to make an offer that gets the sellers attention.
If you are a seller, getting $40,000 over list price with no inspections may still happen but probably not as often. Your Realtor will be able to help you price the property that fits today’s market. Median home prices in the third quarter of 2021 in Caroline County are $266,400, up over $30,000 from 3rd quarter of 2020. Dorchester County median home prices are $260,000 up over $50,000 compared to the 3rd quarter of 2020. The average home price in Queen Anne’s County is $410,000 up by $20,000 from 3rd quarter 2020 and in Talbot County the average home prices are $429,750 down by over $35,000 from this period of 2020.

Todd Fund Making a Difference in Dorchester
|
CAMBRIDGE — In March of this year, Habitat for Humanity Choptank received a $25,000 grant from The Todd Fund to support Habitat for Humanity Choptank’s Helping Hands Revolving Loan Fund and its service to Dorchester County homeowners that reside in areas where Habitat Choptank is focused on new home construction.
“Habitat Choptank has long recognized the importance of building new, affordable, high-quality, and energy-efficient homes in neighborhoods, but over the last 5 years, our work in Neighborhood Revitalization has shed light on another, perhaps even greater, and more pressing need, and that is the assistance that homeowners need in making repairs to their homes,” said JoAnn Hansen, executive director of Habitat Choptank. “These repairs allow income qualifying homeowners to stay in their homes safely and affordably, which adds to the stability of families and neighborhoods.”

Mid-Shore Philanthropy: A Chat with MSCF's Buck Duncan
|
To give some kind of perspective about the current status of the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, it might be helpful to keep in mind that it has taken Washington College 339 years to reach an endowment of roughly $250 million. When Buck Duncan arrived as president of the five-county community foundation in 2013, its total assets were $30 million. In 2021, that number has reached $125 million.
That stunning figure is impressive, but when asked about the thing he, his board, and MSCF staff were most proud of was the creation of a COVID Fund to help the Mid-Shore’s non-profit and educational organizations in April of 2020. Starting with a modest goal of $250,000, the fund actually raised $1.6 million this critical lifeline fund.
In our annual chat with Bunk, he talks about the early days of the pandemic, how MSCF responded, as well as reinforce his foundation’s mission to truly serve the needs of Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot County residents and their need for health care, nutrition, education and protect the Mid-Shore’s unique quality of life.
This video is approximately seven minutes in length. For more information about the Mid-Shore Community Foundation please go here. The MSCF is the fiscal agent for The Spy Newspapers.

UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown and Easton Nationally Recognized
|
EASTON, Md. (November 22, 2021) – University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown and University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton each received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for Fall 2021, making this the third consecutive period both hospitals have received the prestigious A grade. This national distinction recognizes the achievements of the hospitals in consistently protecting patients from harm and error.
Fewer than a third of hospitals nationwide earn the “A” grade and even fewer achieve that milestone in consecutive grading periods.
“This is a significant accomplishment, and one which our entire UM Shore Regional Health family should be proud of,” said Ken Kozel, President and Chief Executive Officer of UM Shore Regional Health. “This is the result of our exceptional team members and medical staff providers, and I am deeply grateful for their dedication to patient care and safety, especially as we’ve faced the challenge of navigating through the pandemic these past two years. Earning this distinction for the third consecutive period speaks volumes to progress we are making towards becoming a High Reliability Organization.”

EASTON, Md. - (November 23, 2021) – Lara Wilson, Director of Rural Health Care Transformation for University of Maryland Shore Regional Health, was recently honored by the Maryland Rural Health Association as recipient of the organization’s 2021 Outstanding Rural Health Advocate Award.

The Outstanding Rural Health Advocate Award is presented to an individual who has contributed extensive time, commitment and dedication making an identifiable difference in rural communities, demonstrating outstanding efforts and leadership in advocating and influencing policies/programs that impact the health and well-being of rural citizens.

Holiday Décor coming to Choptank River Lighthouse
|
|
CAMBRIDGE — With a little help from some generous donation elves, the Cambridge Lighthouse Foundation will be adding a little Christmas cheer to the town’s waterfront this season. Lighted garlands and bows will be strung around the Choptank River Lighthouse for the first time.
The decor is expected to be up and running immediately after the Thanksgiving holiday.
“This project is all about bringing smiles, beauty, and a sense of pride to our Dorchester County community in these precarious times,” said Nancy Johnson, the incoming president of the board at the nonprofit Foundation. “We’ve really been overwhelmed by the way our partners here jumped in to back this concept and make it a reality.”

At the Main Street Gallery: A Chat with Theresa Knight McFadden
|
It took some time for Cambridge-based artist Theresa Knight McFadden to make a full-time career out of art. Concerned that a degree in art might prove too financially challenging, she majored in English at George Mason University and did reasonably well as a freelance writer based out of Alexandria.
But after going back to school to work on her art, she eventually concluded that she would be forever frustrated if she didn’t take a professional option seriously to do what she loved the most. And from the moment forward, she has never looked back with regret as she matured and began making the teaching of art her professional vocation as well.
And part of the fun for Theresa has her work with both visual art and sculptures. In her first Spy interview, she talks about those different approaches to work. Her newly found enjoyment is doing art on her Ipad after seeing a David Hockney show in Australia where the famed artist uses only an Apple pencil and his tablet.
We chatted with Theresa at the Main Street Gallery in Cambridge.
This video is approximately three minutes in length. Theresa Knight McFadden’s work is on display at the Main Street Gallery in Cambridge and on her website here.

UM Shore Regional Health Oncology Nurse Navigator Retires After 30 Years of Patient Care
|
EASTON, Md. - (December 1, 2021) – Margot Spies, BSN, RN, OCN, Oncology Nurse Navigator for the Cancer Center at University of Maryland Shore Regional Health, retired this month after a 30-year career caring for patients in the Mid-Shore region.
“Margot was an integral part of creating the Cancer Center that we have today," said Pam Addy, UM Shore Regional Health’s Vice President, Ambulatory Services. "She has been a role model for delivering compassionate care to our patients and her work will live on through her colleagues for many years to come. We are so grateful to Margot and we wish her the best in the next phase of her life.”
Prior to joining the Cancer Program, Spies worked on 2 East at Shore Medical Center at Easton for two years and for the Easton-based Gastroenterology/Endoscopy medical practice for eight years. During that time, the UM Shore Regional Cancer Center had been established and cancer care was rapidly evolving as an outpatient service, so Spies joined the Cancer Program team as a chemotherapy nurse
