Dear River Forest residents,
Thank you to everyone who participated in the GreenTown Conference at Triton College yesterday. There were more than 500 in attendance and more than 100 youth interested in addressing climate change. The Village and our fellow C4 (Cross Community Climate Collaborative) communities appreciate the community support and feedback we received. We look forward to putting into place some of the sustainable practices we discussed on climate change, economic development, and social equity in the coming months and years. During the conference, C4 was recognized by the U.S. Conference of Mayors with a Childhood Obesity Prevention & Environmental Health and Sustainability Award Grant for $125,000.
The Village continues to partner with the Oak Park River Forest Chamber of Commerce to provide complimentary six-month memberships to River Forest businesses and organizations who wish to join! The Chamber provides many resources for business and organizational professionals, including training, promotion opportunities, networking and advocacy. Call the Chamber at 708-613-0550 or click here for more information.
Lastly, I’d like to encourage residents to support our small businesses by purchasing their produce at the Oak Park Farmers Market or the Triton College Farm Stand. Supporting these organizations benefits our local economy, promotes sustainable agriculture and builds stronger community connections. The Village also offers a Community Herb Garden located at the corner of Augusta Street and Keystone Avenue. More details on this garden can be found in an article below.
Sincerely,

New River Forest Public Library Trustee | |
At the June meeting, the River Forest Public Library (RFPL) Board appointed Kosha Baxi Carstens to serve the remaining two years of the term previously held by Karen Stierwalt. Carstens and her family moved to River Forest in 2018 and have been active Library patrons. She works in the pharmacogenetics industry and co-hosts a podcast, “I am Speaking”, which focuses on the lives of “othered” Americans to hear, share, and amplify their voices. She holds degrees from Illinois Weslyan, Michigan State University and Loyola University Chicago. Carstens says, “I am passionate about policy, equity and empowerment. The Library Board is that place to enact policy to serve our public, ensure equity across the community and empower our youth.”
In regards to Carstens appointment, Cathy Ruggeri, President of the RFPL Board of Trustees says, “we are delighted to appoint Kosha to serve as Trustee and look forward to her contributions.”
