Board Brief
The district’s communication plan includes updates regarding Board meetings. Following each meeting of the Board of Trustees, we share a recap of the evening’s events.

Following is the November 29, 2021 Board Brief:

The Board meeting was called to order at 6:01 PM with the Board retiring into Executive Session at 6:01 PM. Executive Session is a time where limited items such as personnel matters may be discussed. There are no votes taken in Executive Session.

The Board returned to the Open Session at 7:05 PM and Recessed. The public portion of the Board Meeting began at 7:13 PM.

The pledges were led by Sloan Creek Intermediate School 5th grader, Taitum Smith.

The Board of Trustees and the Superintendent of Schools comprise the Team of Eight. The following members of the Team of Eight were present at the meeting.

Chris Ross, Director of Athletics, introduced Carly Littlefield, Head Girls Cross Country Coach and Andy Doughty, Assistant Boys Cross Country Coach. Coach Littlefield recognized the UIL – 5A State Cross Country Girls Championship Team.

Coach Doughty recognized the UIL – 5A State 3rd Place Boys Cross Country Team.

Brie Smith, Director of Advanced Academics, recognized the Lovejoy High School AP Teachers. You may find details regarding the successes of the AP program and a full list of AP teachers here.
Mary Mullen, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, presented the Recognition of Outstanding Leadership in Science Education Award to Cindy Bronson.

Kevin Parker, Executive Director of Human Resources and Communications, introduced new hire Cera Risoli who is a 7th Grade Science Teacher and Middle School Basketball Coach.

Each Board meeting contains a time for public comments related to agenda items. There was one public comment:

  • Annastacia Daugherty spoke in reference to Agenda Item 14G, Retention and Promotion.

Marvin Bobo, Board Trustee, lead the Invocation.

Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools, recommended Chris Koder as the Principal of Willow Springs Middle School. The Board of Trustees unanimously approved Mr. Koder. You may find the press release here.

Katie Kordel, Superintendent of School, recommended Courtney Halpin as the Principal of Sloan Creek Intermediate School. The Board of Trustees unanimously approved Ms. Halpin. You may find the press release here.

Kevin Parker, Executive Director of Human Resources and Communications, recommended the following new hires which were approved by the Board of Trustees:

  • Anjie Lindblom, Licensed Social Worker
  • Michelle Huffman, PES Part-Time GT Teacher
  • Gary Doby, SCIS Band Director

The Board of Trustees approved the Consent Agenda which consisted of the following items:

 
Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools, presented the Notification of Resignations which did not required Board action.

Dr. Jennifer DuPlessis, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations, presented the Board Budget Priorities. The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the Board Budget Priorities which are:

The Board of Trustees approved the TASB Update 118 policy revisions to address new laws enacted from the 87th Legislature which was presented by Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools. Information regarding the following policy updates may be found here.

 
The Board of Trustees approved an update to BED(LOCAL) - Board Meeting Public Participation, to align the Board practice of allowing three minutes for public comments to align with Board Policy. This action item was presented by Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools. Details may be found here.

Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools, presented the election information for the Board of Directors of the Collin Central Appraisal District. The Board of Trustees approved casting 69 votes for Gary Rodenbaugh to be elected to the Board of Directors of the Collin Central Appraisal District. Additional information may be found here.

The Board of Trustees approved the Partnership Agreement with Collin College for Dual Credit Courses, which was presented by Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools. Additional information may be found here.

Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools, presented the Resolution and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools. The Board approved both the Resolution and the MOU. Additional information may be found here.

Dr. Jennifer DuPlessis, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations presented the Charter and Membership for the Financial Sustainability Committee which the Board of Trustees unanimously approved. Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools, presented an update to the Superintendent’s Year 1 Goals, which the Board approved.

Katie Kordel, Superintendent of Schools, shared the following:

  • There are three weeks of school remaining before winter break.
  • We started Thanksgiving weekend with our Volleyball team winning the State Championship. We are looking forward to celebrating the team at the December Board Meeting.
  • The LHS and WSMS robotics teams are enjoying a great season of competition with numerous teams qualifying for state.
  • This weekend we are looking forward to the Fine Arts Festival, regional football game at the Star, and 66 band students competing at TMEA.
  • We will be communicating adjustments to the Fine Arts schedule due to the many students who will be participating in both the Festival and the football game on Saturday.

Regular Board Meetings contain a time for Public Comments Related to Non-Agenda Items. There were no comments.

Barrett Owens, President of the Board, shared a special thank you to our students, staff, and parents for all the tremendous successes we are enjoying in Lovejoy ISD.
