How much longer? Ending the Sin of Racism

St. Edward Parish (4212 s. Mead St.)

Co-sponsored by the St. James Racial Solidarity Team.

The South Seattle Deanery parishes invite you to pray for racial justice as we come together to mark the third anniversary of George Floyd’s murder. As Catholics, we can make a strong and visible stand to end the sin of racism.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU A middle aged woman and her young son moved to Seattle for health reasons and found the climate improved their asthma. The woman was able to transfer into a full-time job with her employer. Unfortunately, the expense of moving and a short lapse of employment helped deplete her savings. She struggled to pay her current month’s rent. The woman called the St Vincent de Paul Helpline (206-767-6449). Because of your support, we were able to offer enough help to get caught up and breathe easier. Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.

CATHEDRAL BOOK CLUB The next meeting of the Cathedral Book Club will be on May 23, 2023 at 7:00pm in the Pastoral Outreach Center. Parishioner Judith Mayotte will lead us in a discussion of All Is Grace: A Biography of Dorothy Day by Jim Forest. Copies are available on Amazon. Information and to register, Joyce Mork-O’Brien, jamob14@comcast.net or 206-226-4099.

THANK YOU! As of April 26, the people of St. James Cathedral have contributed $16,123.40 to Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl. This is an increase of over $3000 from 2022. THANK YOU! If you have not yet turned in your CRS Rice Bowl, please bring it with you the next time you are at Mass, return it to the Parish Office, or donate online at crsricebowl.org/donate.

CARE FOR CREATION TIP OF THE WEEK Don’t pre-rinse. Run your dishwasher. Modern dishwashers use far less water to clean a load of unrinsed plates than washing by hand. Just leave room for the water sprayers to reach every dish.

ST JAMES CATHEDRAL SPRING BLOOD DRIVE To help ensure an ample blood supply for our community this spring, St. James Cathedral is running a two-week blood donation campaign. To participate, visit https://schedule.bloodworksnw.org/DonorPortal/Default.aspx. Plug in your home or work zip code, click next, then on the left of the screen enter May 7 to May 21 to find all the convenient nearby locations offered in our two-week timeframe. When you arrive to donate, check in and provide the code SJC so we can track our participation and impact!

THE CATHEDRAL KITCHEN GARDEN, which provides fresh produce for the weeknight meals served at Cathedral Hall, needs volunteers to help with planting, weeding, maintenance, pruning and harvesting. The garden is located on the corner of Madison and Terry. Information, Kathy Dugaw, kadugaw@gmail.com.

SUNDAY BREAKFAST St. James Cathedral is one of only two sites that serve breakfast for homeless and low-income persons on Sunday mornings in Seattle. Please consider joining our Saturday, 3.30pm-5.30pm cooking team, or our Sunday, 6.30am-8.30am serving team. Information, Patrick Barredo, 206-382-4515 or pbarredo@stjames-cathedral.org.

VISIT THE CATHEDRAL COLUMBARIUM A columbarium is a cemetery for the reverent burial of cremated remains. The way we honor the mortal remains of our deceased family members and friends is a reflection of the faith we profess in the Nicene Creed: we believe in the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. The columbarium is open for prayer whenever the Cathedral is open. It is a beautiful place to visit and pray for all our beloved dead. Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

PREPARES DIAPER DRIVE The Respect Life committee at the Cathedral has re-launched! Their first project will be a diapers and baby wipes drive on May 13-14. Especially needed are size 3, 4 and 5 diapers. Donations, which will go to Catholic Community Services’ PREPARES program, can be brought to Stuff the Cathedral Van, which will be parked on Terry Avenue outside the Cathedral that weekend. Would you like to be involved in further efforts to ensure the dignity of all life? New members are welcome, especially to help with the upcoming diaper and baby wipes drive. Information, Ted Nutting, theodorenutting@msn.com.

CHOIR CAMP 2023 All children and youth with unchanged (treble) voices entering grades 1 through 8 are encouraged to register for Choir Camp! All are welcome: parishioners and non-parishioners alike. Camp occurs daily August 7-11, Monday through Friday, 9am until 4pm. Camp concludes with all choristers returning at 9am on August 13 to sing for the 10am Sunday Mass. Contact the Youth Music Office to register today. Information, Youth Music Office, 206-382-4876 or youthmusic@stjames-cathedral.org.

CONGRATULATIONS AND GOD'S BLESSINGS to the children who made their First Holy Communion on Sunday, April 30, at the Noon Mass. May God continue to bless you, Julia, Imogen, Robert Bennett, Hunter, Cole, Dominic, Shaiyenne, Elliott, Paulette, Evelyn, Renzo, Mateo, Wallace, Eleanor, Juliana, Blakely, and Bronwyn!

PARISH REMEMBRANCE Throughout the year, because we are the Cathedral Church, we remember in prayer at Mass and Vespers each of the parishes and missions of the Archdiocese of Seattle on a Sunday near their feast day. This week we pray for the parishes of St. Philip in Woodland and St. Brendan in Bothell.
