President's Desk Edition
Your Chamber’s got its groove back!
I’m happy to share that our committees and in-house team are at work preparing the return of our popular signature events and programs. These include the Women’s Leadership Committee’s “COVID & The Workforce: What’s Next?” on June 15. This is the first major event we hold since March 2020, so try to attend and catch-up with Chamber friends you haven’t seen in a while. You can reserve a table of 6 or purchase individual seats here: https://www.centralchamber.biz/index.php?id=154&eventuid=6423
Just around the corner on August 19 is our prestigious 12th Annual Inspire Awards Ceremony. This year, we’re holding it as a late afternoon reception to try something new. There are some great sponsorship opportunities available including time at the mic to address the VIP’s and guests. Reach out to me or Zoe at the Chamber if you’re interested. To recognize someone who has inspired you, here’s a link for more info and a nomination form: https://www.centralchamber.biz/inspire-awards-2021
And, on Sept. 30, we’re wrapping up the 2020/2021 program year with our 68th Annual Awards Breakfast at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort. It’s a morning of celebrating your Chamber and the many people behind its success. Much more to come!
Finally, please remember to support your fellow Chamber members through our ChamberSHOP promotion. Simply take a photo of a receipt from a Chamber member you did business with and email to us. We’ll pull one monthly for a free member profile to be featured in our BizReach e-newsletter and on our social media platforms. You can find more details here: ChamberSHOP!
Wishing you all a prosperous month,
           Tom Morrissette, President

Tampa Bay COVID Recovery Update!  June 2, 2021
The COVID-19 Regional Recovery Dashboard tracks the key economic metrics that help Tampa Bay residents and policymakers navigate the region's path to recovery.
It’s produced by the Tampa Bay Partnership.

The latest data presents generally positive results. Sales prices of existing single-family homes hit a new record, and airline passenger traffic in the region increased from the prior month, surpassing 2 million passengers for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
While the preliminary April unemployment rose from the March level, it reflects an increase in both employment and total labor force from the prior month. Initial claims for unemployment benefits averaged 2,940 per week over the past four weeks for which data is available, which is higher than the previous reporting period (1,940 per week) and nearly triple pre-pandemic levels of roughly 1,000 per week.
Mobility data continues to hold steady, even as residents receive vaccinations, suggesting (for the moment) no quick return to pre-pandemic commuting behaviors.
Finally, regional sales and use tax collections, which fell sharply in the initial months of the pandemic, have (as of last month) absorbed those losses, although the recovery has not occurred in all counties in the region.
This monthly update on the regional economic dashboard highlights key trends and changes that our community leaders should closely monitor.

The clock is ticking for anyone collecting unemployment: soon you’ll be required to search for work to keep your benefits. And while businesses say they’re struggling to hire because no one wants to work, in reality, unemployed people say the job market isn’t as great as it seems.
DeSantis has emerged from the coronavirus pandemic as the most prominent Republican governor and an early White House front-runner for 2024.
Decades of environmental stress culminated this year in one of the worst manatee die-offs in recent history: At least 749 manatees have died in Florida in 2021, in what the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has called an unusual mortality event.
The restart of cruising in Florida could have been smooth sailing. After a suspension lasting more than a year, all of the major cruise lines could have been gearing up for voyages out of Florida ports this summer with 95% vaccinated passengers and crew.
Florida’s tolling authority is offering a new transponder compatible with the E-ZPass toll system used in 19 states on the east coast, including New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
