A MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
Rav Joseph B. Soloveitchik said of the Torah:

“[I]t is an exciting story that we tell [our children]. It is the story of a teaching community which cuts across the ages, encompassing people who lived millennia ago, who made their contribution to the [House of] Israel, and have left the stage. We also tell them the story of people who, at some point in the distant future, will enter the historical stage. Our story unites countless generations; present, past and future merge into one great experience.”

In this week’s Torah portion, Shelakh-Lekha, we read the story of the 12 spies that Moses sent into Canaan to reconnoiter and bring back reports. For the most part, it is not a happy story. Indeed, the spies spend 40 days in the land. When they return, the spies report that the land is fertile and the fruit is wonderful; however, 10 of the spies explain that the cities are fortified and that the people are giants. They therefore cry that there is no way that the Israelites can defeat them.

Two of the spies counter that nothing is impossible when God is on your side. Despite the good report of the two spies, God is so angered by the initial bad report, and the fact that the Israelites believe it, that He punishes the Israelites by making them roam in the desert for 40 years.

Though the story is unhappy it is important that we read it each year and learn the lessons it teaches. Those lessons may change from year to year depending on our own experiences. What Soloveitchik was saying above is that when we read Torah, we become students and teachers of history. When we know our history, we can use it to impact our present and our future.

We read Torah and remember the stories so that we can learn from them and use them in our lives. The lessons we learn today can then be used by our children, and by their children. But our children's children will also read the original and learn their own lessons. That is the gift that Torah provides, and provides, and provides.

It is a story, a history, a past, a present, a future. It is a blessing.

Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay
THE WEEK THAT WAS...

Our trilogy review of the 3rd Season of Shitsel has come to an end this week. Rabbi Jay was able to isolate clips of each of the characters and it was a unique and interesting way to look at this fabulous and popular Israeli series. Thank you Rabbi for putting this program together. Shkoyach!!!!

The WAX Book Review of "The Third Daughter" was so interesting, the group decided to have a second session last Wednesday. Thank you to discussion leader, Gloria Canter, for being so well organized and prepared.

ENDOWMENT FUND - NEW INFORMATION !!!!!!!

Herb and Selma z”l Shapiro established the first individual Endowment Fund in memory of his father, as part of the JCC’s Endowment Fund portfolio. Judith z”l & Donald Pripstein joined the Shapiros and established The Pripstein Family Endowment Fund.

As recently reported, Don Pripstein pledged another $50,000 to establish The Judith & Donald Pripstein Endowment Fund.

As a result of Don’s letter, another member has stepped forward to establish an individual Fund. He pledged $50,000 and made a substantial first payment. The announcement of this will take place as soon as all the naming particulars are decided.

A donation of at least $50,000 to the endowment fund will allow the donor to name one of the funds as the donor wishes. All such named funds will be joined together to be part of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Endowment funds are necessary to ensure the continuation and well being of our congregation. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this portfolio, whether as a specific named individual fund, or as a general donation. The donation can be spread over one, two, or three years, and can be paid via check, donation of appreciated stock, wills, or from the RMD of your IRA or 401K account. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
