Ventura Water 2021 Accomplishments
This year was full of project milestones and accomplishments! As the year comes to an end, Ventura Water would like to reflect on a few major highlights from 2021.

VenturaWaterPure: The City of Ventura’s proposed water reuse program, VenturaWaterPure, was awarded $1.7 million in federal funding from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s (BOR) Title XVI Water Reclamation and Reuse Program.

The VenturaWaterPure program is also being considered for a low-interest loan through the Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) program. If awarded, the City will receive a $125 million loan to fund the design and construction of the program’s Advanced Water Purification Facility. The City is expecting to receive formal loan approval in early 2022.

The program remains in the design phase, with construction anticipated to begin in 2023.

Meter Upgrade Project: The City is in its final phase of a three-year project to replace manually read water meters with advanced meters that provide customers with real time water usage data and leak detection capabilities. The project is nearly complete with over 31,000 meters installed to date.

Web Connect: In July 2021, Ventura Water successfully launched the Web Connect customer portal. Web Connect enables customers to view and track hourly water use, receive leak detection notifications, and make bill payments from any device.

Water Conservation: We are happy to announce that Ventura residents remain committed to water conservation and improved water use efficiency. In 2021, Ventura Water customers conserved an average of 20% compared to pre-drought years.

Bug of the Month
Red and green are a few of the popular festive colors for this time of year, and the predominant colors of our “bug” of the month - algae! In recent years, microalgae have been identified as beneficial microorganisms to wastewater treatment systems. These single-cell algae species reduce chemical and biochemical oxygen demands, while also removing coliform bacteria, nitrogen, phosphorus, and heavy metals from wastewater.

Unfortunately, certain drawbacks have limited the use of this technology and further research is needed to see its application to a full-scale system. Perhaps we will see more of this emerging technology in the holiday seasons to come!
