A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
February 25th, 2022

Dear Colleague,

It was shocking news. Many of us woke up on February 21st to hear of the death of our friend and colleague, Dr. Paul Farmer. Paul passed away in his sleep from a cardiac arrest in Butaro, Rwanda. It is impossible to overstate the impact Paul had on millions of lives as a physician, teacher, leader and humanitarian. He was clearly one of the most influential figures in global health and showed how compassion, talent and grit can be a powerful combination to change the world we live in for the better. Our deepest condolences go to Paul’s wife, Didi Bertrand and his children, Catherine, Elizabeth and Sebastian. We mourn his passing with his colleagues and friends around the world. In this bulletin are a couple of the many articles that were written about Paul.

As of this writing, a horrible disaster is unfolding in the Ukraine. Russia’s invasion of this country is an international crime. Many innocent people will die because of President Putin’s choice to invade a country that poses no threat to it. This invasion may unleash a massive refugee crisis and a humanitarian disaster in Europe. Our hope is that President Putin will remove his troops from Ukraine immediately and cease all hostilities against the country. Failing that, a robust international response that targets the Russian leader and the cronies who support him will be needed.

CUGH 2022, ‘Healthy People, Healthy Planet, Social Justice’, is coming up quickly, March 21-25. We have a stellar program and an extraordinary list of confirmed speakers from around the world. The week will be a rich environment for listening to and engaging innovators who are at the forefront of addressing the critical issues of today. Global health has had many successes. However, deep structural inequities persist within the sector. This contributes to global disparities and harms our collective ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Please read our article on how we can reform global health. It was authored by UGHE’s Dr. Agnes Binagwaho, CUGH’s Executive Director, Dr. Keith Martin, and others. Share and sign our 'Call to Action' which includes specific actions that can be taken to achieve this goal.
