BSG Research Trials for Growing Oyster Mushrooms

Brewer’s spent grain (BSG) is a waste product from the brewing industry and has potential value as a substrate for growing oyster mushrooms. The biological efficiency (mushroom biomass produced/initially inoculated substrate mass) for two of the three BSG substrates had efficiencies equal to or greater than the control treatments. In addition, a proximate analysis showed mushrooms grown on the BSG substrates had higher protein content than those grown on controls.
