K-6 Presidential Awards for 2021-22

The K-6 Cycle for the Presidential Awards is now open!
Nominations and applications are now open for the 2021-22 cycle of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) for K-6 teachers of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.

The entire application cycle has been moved forward a few months, with nominations closing on Friday, January 7 and applications due to be completed by Sunday, February 6.
Visit www.paemst.org to nominate a great K-6 teacher!

Did you know that a person does not have to be nominated to complete a Presidential Award application?

Each year, several of our state’s finalists, and eventual awardees, began their application without a nomination. Any eligible K-6 teacher of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or computer science can complete an application. To start an application, visit www.paemst.org.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about the North Carolina Presidential Awards Program, please contact the State Coordinator for PAESMT, Joseph Reaper, at joseph.reaper@dpi.nc.gov.

and
NEW! Middle Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MidMCM) November 3 – 16, 2021

COMAP’s High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM) and Middle Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MidMCM) are international contests designed to provide high school and middle school/level students the opportunity to work as team members to engage in and improve their modeling, problem solving, and writing skills. Teams of up to four students from your school apply mathematics to model and develop a solution to a real-world problem. There is no limit to the number of teams per school. Teams with all students 14 ½ years of age or younger participate in MidMCM. See www.himcmcontest.com or www.midmcm.com for complete rules.

Let the contests be part of your class plans this fall. We encourage you and your students to form one or more teams to represent your school in this rewarding contest. Teachers report using the contest as part of a mathematics or modeling course, or as a math club activity. Some students form a team and participate just for fun. Please share this information with mathematics teachers, STEM educators (science, technology, engineering, etc.), and students.

2021 HiMCM/MidMCM CONTEST DATES ARE November 3-16, 2021. Teams choose their own working times within this contest window to work in-person and/or virtually. COMAP announces results in February 2022.

Citizen Science Opportunity for North Carolina Teachers

Are you a 5th grade teacher in North Carolina? Would you like your students to do real science? Do you wish you had resources for teaching science on your school grounds?
If so, we have a great opportunity for you! Please complete this brief interest form for a research study that will happen across the state during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. Our project, Supporting Teacher Learning for Effective School-Based Citizen Science, or “TL4CS” for short, is funded by the National Science Foundation and will study what helps elementary teachers use citizen science to engage students with science content and practices. TL4CS will focus on two citizen science projects: Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) and The Lost Ladybug Project
  • Participating teachers will:
  • Implement CoCoRaHS and Lost Ladybug with their students using materials developed by our team
  • Attend approximately 3 days of summer professional development (in-person and virtual)
  • Attend monthly virtual meetings (1-2 hours) to receive additional support throughout the school year
  • Complete a weekly brief (5-10 minute) instructional log about project implementation
  • Complete an online survey at the beginning and end of the school year
  • Administer student research instruments near the beginning and end of the school year
  • Collect anonymous student work throughout the year (materials and postage will be provided)
All participants who complete the study will receive an honorarium up to $1600 in installments over the two years of involvement.
If you have questions, please reach out to our team at TL4CS@horizon-research.com.

Each year the North Carolina Division of Air within the Department of Environmental Quality coordinates the AQ-IQ Contest for Seventh-grade science students. The contest asks students to:
  • research an air quality problem,
  • look for solutions to the problem, and
  • create a creative/artistic, on-line, poster, or video project to help others learn about air and air pollutions solutions.
The projects will be turned in using an on-line tool, and can be turned in at any time up to March 7, 2022. The on-line format allows more flexibility in both the traditional, on-line and distance learning classroom. The schedule will also allow your students to participate in any academic calendar or pacing.
