Climate Change Affecting Composition of Forests in Yukon, Canada, Study Finds

Deciduous trees are expanding in several areas of Yukon because of effects linked to climate change, according to new research. Kirsten Reid, the lead author of a study published in Environmental Reviews, told CBC News that drought, wildfire and permafrost thaw are changing the makeup of forests. She said coniferous trees, which dominate Yukon forests, seem to be fighting a losing battle against deciduous trees, such as aspen.

Billions More for US Science: How the Landmark Spending Plan Will Boost Research

The US National Science Foundation and other research agencies could see major infusions of cash, thanks to the US$280-billion CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, which the US Congress passed last week. Two years in the making, this landmark legislation promises one of the biggest funding increases in years for science. But it remains unclear whether Congress will ultimately deliver the money it has pledged.

Pond Inlet Youth to Study Ties Between Centuries-old Whaling Industry, Inuit Culture

Pond Inlet youth are set to explore the impact Scottish whaling had on Inuit culture and history this fall, after receiving a US$50,000 grant. Ikaarvik, a non-profit organization based in Pond Inlet, received the funding last fall from the Trebek Initiative, which gives money to projects that protect the environment, culture and history. It’s a joint fund by the National Geographic Society and Royal Canadian Geographical Society in honour of the late Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek.
