Commemorating Juneteenth: On behalf of SHA staff and the board of directors

The Sacramento Housing Alliance advocates for the development and preservation of affordable homes that provide a platform for opportunity and equity. We celebrate the 2021 establishment of Juneteenth (June 19th) as a national holiday.

SHA is committed to advancing racial justice and equity in all our work. We have long recognized the profound ways in which systemic racism in zoning and lending has harmed Black families and disproportionately locked them out of safe, affordable homes and neighborhoods. We believe that, as affordable housing developers and advocates, we have a duty to work to remedy the exclusion of and harm toward the Black community and other communities of color as a result of historic policies and actions. Juneteenth is an important opportunity for SHA to reaffirm our commitment to developing and advocating for affordable housing policies and practices that will expand inclusion and opportunity.

The establishment of Juneteenth as a national holiday was an important step in acknowledging this country’s racist history and celebrating the resiliency and contributions of the Black community. However, it is just that… a step. It is vital that we continue the work to address the continuing harm of systemic racism and bigotry.

SHA is dedicated to continuing and strengthening our commitment to ensuring all aspects of our work actively and intentionally serve to dismantle historic and ongoing inequities. Please join us in this work and in celebrating this important national holiday.
