Selected Titles for October 2021
Well, fall is upon us here at World Headquarters: the nights are cool again, and the vegetable garden is showing signs of change. We have an impressive holly bush, with an abundance of berries that the birds can't resist. Sharp eyed readers will see the plastic dish under the front of the bush; that is where we feed our resident bunny Clem. The dish looks empty today; guess we took the photo after breakfast!
With Halloween right around the corner, I figured a shot of our bookstore black cat Hank helping me with newsletter edits would be appropriate. He's easily bored when I don't let him help me, so we humor him and work around his majesty.
I was brought in to the VA hospital for my Pfizer booster shot this month. I feel I've done all I can to keep this virus under control, short of becoming a hermit!

This newsletter has some wonderful and impressive offerings, pieces we've never seen before and are not even in institutional collections. We hope you find a few titles for your libraries.

In the next two newsletters, we'll be featuring several gift-worthy titles for the holidays, so stay tuned!

As always, happy browsing!

[Paint]. Seeley Brothers. Manufacturers of Averill Paint, Ready for Use. New York: Seeley Brothers, 1886. First edition. Folio, publishers blind-stamped cloth. Lithographic title leaf, pp. 8, 20 chromolithographic plates, each with descriptive text facing, pp. 3 of advertisements, one with paint samples, which includes 2 chromolithographic plates with one incorporating 12 flat pastel paint samples.Presentation book plate inside front cover dated 1888. Embossed Boards. Very Good.

Rare paint trade catalogue with only one copy of the 1886 edition and two copies of the 1889 edition listed on OCLC. "In 1875, the architect Elisha Charles Hussey boarded a transcontinental train to survey the state of American architecture. The resulting book, Home Building.from New York to San Francisco, (N.Y., 1876), contained 42 plates. A decade later Seeley Bros. Paint Co. recycled several of Hussey's designs as full-color lithographs. These plates are among the most informative to survive for details of late Victorian exterior decoration. Picking out in bright color was relatively rare in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. The Seeley Brothers Company seems consistently to have advocated gayer treatments than Sherwin-Williams, Devoe, or Lucas." (Roger Moss, Century of Color. Exterior Decoration for American Buildings 1820-1920, page 49). Of considerable value as architectural documents, house paint catalogues such as this by Seeley are also among the most interesting American color plate books. A truly stunning book. Located in a barn sale in Connecticut recently, this lovely antique roofing tool has seen a lot of years, and has a lot of years left in it! The Dos and Don'ts of Yesterday - 2-book boxed set signed by the author
Sloane, Eric

The Dos and Don'ts of Yesterday - 2-book boxed set signed by the author Do: A Little Book of Early American Know-How, and Don't: A Little Book of Early American Gentility. New York: Walker, 1972. Signed by author in red above his printed name on paste-on. Cloth over Boards, Gilt Lettering. Near Fine in Very Good+ Slipcase.

A delightful mixture of early American know-how and good old-fashioned gentility, Eric Sloane's Do's and Don'ts captures the spirit of bygone America in words and pictures. Combining two of the beloved folk historian's nostalgic how-to guides, this collection offers vintage, homespun advice that recalls "the joy of doing things not just the old-fashioned way, but plainly the right way." A shining historical gem, this little book of American lore recalls a more kindly, less hurried time. Lovingly gathered by "Mr. Americana" himself from colonial-era almanacs and diaries, hundreds of brief reflections spread time-honored wisdom on everything from curing hiccups, lighting a proper fire, and mending clothing and furniture, to predicting the weather, making soap, and getting rid of ants, bees, swallows - and boring houseguests. Sloane's evocative drawings add the perfect finishing touch. Hard to find; this is the first time we've been able to offer this title in over a decade. (20692)   $75.00

P. B. Wight: Architect, Contractor, and Critic, 1838-1925
Landau, Sarah Bradford
[Architectural Monograph]. Landau, Sarah Bradford. P. B. Wight: Architect, Contractor, and Critic, 1838-1925 An Exhibition Organized by the Burnham Library of Architecture, The Art Institute of Chicago; Checklists of Wight's Publications, his Buildings and Projects, and those of the firm of Carter, Drake and Wight. Chicago, IL: Art Institute of Chicago, 1981. First edition. Quarto, pp. 108, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Color Pictorial Wraps. Very Good.

Wight is one of many Chicago architects who, while influential within his own lifetime, has been neglected by recent historians who have stressed Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Wight's drawings were buried in the Archives of the Burnham Library since their donation in 1918, a casualty of the previous emphasis on those Chicago greats, and the antagonism of the modern movement and its functionalist doctrines to the elaborate decoration of Victorian architecture. The Wight Collection remained virtually unknown to students and scholars alike until this exhibition in 1918. The exhibition and this catalog present Wight's forgotten contribution to American architecture and the gem-like quality of his designs to a post-modern age that is more receptive to the artistic impact of architectural drawings. Frank Furness: The Complete Works
Thomas, George E., Jeffrey A. Cohen, Michael J. Lewis
[Architectural Monograph]. Thomas, George E., Jeffrey A. Cohen, Michael J. Lewis. Frank Furness: The Complete Works. Princeton, NJ: Princeton Architectural Press, 1991. First edition. Quarto, pp. 385, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

Frank Furness was the most unique and prolific American architect of the 19th century. Apprenticed in the atelier of Richard Morris Hunt and inspired by the values of his father's friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Furness derived architectural form from the representation of purpose. Turning architecture away from history toward the forces of the present, his art has a visceral immediacy that is unprecedented. His work spread to the Midwest through his disciple, Louis Sullivan, and permeated the underlying values of Philadelphia architecture, ultimately shaping the present "Philadelphia School" centered around Louis Kahn and Robert Venturi. This encyclopedic book is the first complete monograph of Furness's work. More than 640 projects are presented through 700 photographs and drawings. (20702)   $50.00

The Beautiful Bronx 1920-1950

1920 to 1950 were unusual and exciting years to live in The Bronx. It was during this period that The Bronx grew from a rural and suburban hinterland of New York City to become a full-fledged part of the thriving metropolis. In this nostalgic look at The Bronx, we see people traveling by trolley, elevated line, and ferry; hard-working middle class people living in brick apartment houses and cozy frame dwellings; children playing stickball and potzie in the streets or baseball in the empty lots and parks. Two hundred rare photographs give this fascinating volume the look of an old photo album. If you're from The Bronx, you'll discover in this book a treasure chest of memories; if not, you'll find it to be an intriguing return to the past. (20690)   $35.00

Do you like your community? The people of the world want a mixture of luxuries and material comforts, satisfying jobs, and economic freedom. Von Utopie Zu Utopie
[From Utopia to Utopia: Russian Architecture 1919-1939]
Lachmann, Alex
[International]. Lachmann, Alex. Von Utopie Zu Utopie [From Utopia to Utopia: Russian Architecture 1919-1939]. Cologne: Galerie Alex Lachmann, 1993. First edition. Quarto, pp. 116, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Text in English and German. Boards. Very Good.

This is the exhibition catalog for a show which took place in 1993 at the Galerie Alex Lachmann, an art gallery in Cologne, Germany. After WWI, Russia became a center of unrest and social experimentation, and the birthplace of radical movements in the arts. To create a new, just society fascinated the creative intelligentsia. New people and a new society needed a new environment and new architectural forms. These ideas became the driving force in the development of architecture after the October revolution. For the first time in history, Russia tried to solve social problems through architecture. The utopian and radical ideas and aims confronted architecture with utopian tasks. The new socialistic city, communal house, worker's club, palace of labor and mass kitchens could not be realized in old forms. The artists started to search for new forms. This path led from futuristic experimental design via Constructivism and Rationalism, to the totalitarian socialistic style of the second half of the 1930s, the Palace of Soviets being its apotheosis. The importance of Russia in the development of modern architecture and the enormous influence Russian Constructivism had on the Bauhaus and other Western architects led to this exhibition in the hope that the public would appreciate its relevance. University Housing in Canada
Bland, John and Norbert Schoenauer
[Architecture]. Bland, John and Norbert Schoenauer. University Housing in Canada. Montreal: McGill University Press, 1966. First edition. Oblong small quarto, pp. 132, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Perfect Bound. Very Good in Wraps.

With the growth in the number of students at university, the problem of undergraduate housing had become acute. In this critical survey, two architects consider university residences throughout Canada. Their findings do not present a happy picture. A university residence ought to be more than simply a place to live. It should be part of a continuity of university buildings and spaces, designed to relate living and studying in a meaningful way. This book showed how few university residences in Canada fulfilled these qualifications. Not only universities in big cities but also those in small towns, with their tradition of student residences, were faced with unprecedented problems requiring new solutions. The authors illustrate their findings with numerous photographs, architectural plans, and drawings. These provided a concrete and comprehensive picture of the situation at representative Canadian universities across the country. This book should be of great interest to architects, students of architecture, and university administrators and planners. (20707)   $55.00

Small quarto, pp. 131, over 300 b/w illustrations including 120 photographs, 150 architectural drawings and cross sections, and 50 plans of towns and residential areas. Cloth over Boards. The second in a series on modern residential architecture, this title illustrates the exemplary city planning, housing projects and suburban redevelopment programs of post-WWII England. This volume deals with a country whose high standards of living have determined the high level of economic, technical and artistic solutions to the problem of housing in heavily populated regions. Scale models, blueprints, regional and detailed maps and ground plans, photographs of buildings and drawings of construction details make this volume invaluable for everyone concerned with building homes. A book of sumptuous elegance which traces the history of taste in relation to the style, furnishing, and decoration of the English country house. Country Life's articles on country houses, great and less great, began when the magazine began in 1897, as a feature likely to please the owners and would-be owners of such houses, and therefore as a reflection of such people's taste. Over the years they have come to work as an important influence on that taste. This book, drawn from Country Life's unique and enormous library of photographs, presents some 200 houses ranging from ancient manors to the work of 20th century architects such as Lutyens, and includes some of the grandest and most beautiful domestic architecture ever designed. Each house has a short text and a spread of magnificent photographs showing significant aspects of its interior. (20699)   $40.00

The second volume of illustrations, including many plans and much contemporary graphic material as well as specially taken photographs, shows the full range of Early Victorian architecture as it was conceived and as it is today. Owen Jones was the sort of innovative total designer in the 19th century that Frank Lloyd Wright was in the 20th century. Equally proficient - and prolific - in the fields of architecture, design (graphic and interior), and publishing, Jones was a passionate reformer and theorist who sought to elevate British taste through education and by improving the design and manufacture of furniture, textiles, wallpaper, carpets, and other products. Through his efforts, he transformed thinking about architecture and the decorative arts by introducing the psychology of perception. This volume is beautifully illustrated, produced, and written. The Nature and Art of Workmanship
Pye, David
[Design]. Pye, David. The Nature and Art of Workmanship. Bethel, CT: Cambium Press, 1995. Revised. Quarto, pp. 143, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Original Wraps. Very Good.

In this thoroughly mechanized age, what is the point of craft? Does it make any sense to work with hand tools when machines can do the same job faster, and in many cases better? What visual richness do we lose by embracing a mass-produced world? This book explores the meaning of skill and its relationship to design and manufacture. Cutting through a century of fuzzy thinking, the author proposes a new theory of making based on the concepts of 'workmanship of risk' and 'workmanship of certainty,' and shows how good workmanship imparts all-important diversity to our visual environment. No one who works with tools and materials, or who designs things for others to make, can afford to be without this penetrating book. (20686)   $40.00

Stone Built: Contemporary American Houses
Goff, Lee
[Stone]. Goff, Lee. Stone Built: Contemporary American Houses. New York: Monacelli, 1997. First edition. Quarto, pp. 272, illustrated with color photographs. Hardcover. Near Fine, with no DJ.

This volume presents twenty-seven contemporary residences, spanning the entire stylistic spectrum and thoroughly documented with color photography. The United States has always had a great number of stone houses, subject to regional and stylistic variations, as author Lee Goff writes in her comprehensive introduction. That history and variety are alive today, as houses of stone continue to appear in myriad guises - classical, modern, vernacular, postmodern - throughout the country. In fact, Goff concludes that a new renaissance of stone houses is at hand. The exceptional residences in this book, by such renowned architects as Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer, Will Bruder, 1100 Architect, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Lake/Flato, and Kohn Pedersen Fox, provide ample evidence of this renaissance. Goff discusses with each architect the design of each house, focusing on the decision to use stone, the building process, and other related choices, while color photographs illustrate both exteriors and interiors.
