Join Us For 2 Minutes, 2 Slides, 2 Questions!

The 2 Minutes, 2 Slides, 2 Questions Session for the SDAFP Annual Symposium is an energetic, fun, more informal session that is always highly rated by attendees. We need volunteers to present an interesting case, clinical pearl, topic, or really anything related to Family Medicine, but there are rules as the session title implies. Only 2 minutes are allowed for the entire presentation (and it's totally ok to be under time) and only 2 slides can be used. If the presenter is still talking at the 2-minute mark they will be cut off by an alarm, but it's always well received. The presenter will then field 2 questions from the audience (but I always say that "I don't know" is a perfectly acceptable answer). We usually have around 10-12 presenters, one right after the other, so it's fast paced, but my number one rule as the moderator is that we make it FUN!

If you would like to present, please email me (Brad Stiles) at tunaboy63@gmail.com

The 2-2-2 Session will occur on Saturday, June 24 from 1:40-2:20pm. We also want to encourage attendees to attend the resident Poster Session which follows afterwards.

Lobbying the California Legislature

San Diego was well represented in Sacramento during the CAFP All-Member Meeting and Lobby Day held in March 18th-20th, 2023. Several of our members, including residents, were able to meet with representatives from the California State Assembly and Senate. Our SDAFP Board members who are Family Medicine leaders at both the local and state level discussed issues of concern for our practice with legislative staffers and had the residents also share their stories.

Immediate Past President, Speaking on a Resolution

Statement from Julie Celebi, M.D.

2023 SDAFP President:

A big hello to my San Diego family medicine colleagues!

My name is Julie Çelebi, and I am this year's SDAFP President. I am an Associate Clinical Professor at UCSD and Wellness Director for our Department of Family Medicine. Some of my passions include full-spectrum family medicine, LGBTQ+ healthcare, reproductive health, medical education, and care of medically vulnerable populations. I'm grateful to Dr. David Bazzo for introducing me to the SDAFP board of directors back in 2020. It is my hope to share that same gift of bringing together family physicians from across the county, and we sincerely hope that you can join us for some of our programming over the coming year.

We are so excited about the fantastic lineup of featured speakers for our upcoming SDAFP Family Medicine Update 2023 taking place June 23rd-25th at Paradise Point Hotel. In addition to up to 29.5 approved hours of CME, there will be some fun social events embedded in the weekend with opportunites to network with colleagues from across the state and beyond. Please go to our website for more information and to register: www.sandiegoafp.org.

Do you have an awesome FM colleague that you would like to give a shout out to in one of our future newsletters? If so, email sbazzo@sandiegoafp.org with a photo and a brief description about this individual, and we would be happy to feature them. Similarly, if there is a community service opportunity or other event of relevance to family physicians that you would like to publicize, please send the information our way to spread the word.

We also look forward to enhancing our advocacy presence as a chapter. In doing so, we have a goal to work together in order to develop and present resolutions from San Diego for next year's All Member Advocacy Meeting. If you have ideas for resolutions but aren't sure where to start or are looking for co-authors to join you, please don't hesitate to e-mail me at jcelebi@health.ucsd.edu and we will partner with you.

Our next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 17th, 6:30-8pm via Zoom, and all are welcome! Your voice is important to us - if you have perspectives to share or are looking for more ways to get involved, please email Sabrina (address listed above) for the Zoom link.

Thanks for being a part of our chapter, and I hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

Julie Çelebi, M.D.

Installation of Officers Dinner,

In addition, SDAFP congratulated our 2023 Scholarship Award Winners: Scripps Chula Vista Family Medicine Resident Dr. Arienne Malakmadani and UCSD medical students Michael Fink and Mallorie Nguyen.

Local Family Medicine Residents Committed to

Community Engagement

UCSD Family Medicine residents spent an afternoon with elementary students at the Ocean Discovery Institute in the City Heights area of San Diego during our recent Residents and Faculty Together (RAFT) event. Ocean Discovery is a wonderful organization that fosters learning experiences for young people traditionally excluded from science due to race, income status, and educational opportunities, and helps to establish mentorship connections and expose students to various STEM fields.

Our famiy medicine residents collaborated with EMT personnel and our ObGyn colleagues to create a multifaceted workshop covering various aspects of medicine including anatomy and nutrition stations.
