Family Prayer

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Those who are sick shall live outside the camp.
  • The Book of Leviticus is a collection of laws; many having to do with the proper worship of God.
  • In today's reading we hear of illness and exclusion from communal life.
  • Because people did not know about the process of contagion at the time, the community banished persons with any skin disease as long as the disease lasted.
Reading II : 1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1
Imitate me as I do Christ.
  • The passage from 1 Corinthians refers to a concern the early Christians had about eating meat that had been sacrificed to idols.
  • Paul makes the point that our behavior toward others is more important than what we eat or drink.
  • Paul's advice is to avoid offending one another at all costs.
Gospel : Mark 1:40-45
If you will do so, you can cure me.
  • The Gospel story shows that Jesus not only has the power to cure disease, he also has the power to heal the separation from the community and the separation from God, which leprosy signified.
  • Jesus' approach to the leper would have scandalized the people of his time.
  • By touching the leper, Jesus demonstrated the arrival of the kingdom of God.
A Message from Mrs. Laidlaw Otto

Dear SJE Families,

It’s hard to believe that Lent will begin next week, and that Easter will be here six weeks after that! Planning our school activities for Lent was quite a challenge, on the heels of our busy Catholic Schools week.

We always strive to provide our students with opportunities to practice prayer, fasting, and almsgiving throughout the Lenten season. I am including a couple of highlights for you below.

Our students will attend mass on Ash Wednesday. The distribution of ashes will look a bit different this year. I’m including a link for those who would like to see how ashes will be distributed this year.

Our third through eighth graders will copy a bible quote every day through the season of Lent. Today’s electronic communication includes a list of the quotes. We recommend that families take time to read and discuss the quote each day. This can be incorporated into your family mealtime, or perhaps before bed as part of your evening prayer routine for older students. Even our primary students, who are not yet able to copy the quotes, will be exposed to these bible passages in their classrooms daily.

We will be continuing with our Lenten tradition of gathering as a school to pray the Stations of the Cross on Friday afternoons during Lent.

Father Michael will be hearing the confessions of our third through eighth graders during the month of March. Due to Covid-19 restrictions we were unable to offer confession to our students during Advent, and so we are excited to be able to provide this sacrament to our students.

Watch next week’s newsletter for more Lenten updates!

Together In God’s Name,

Mary Laidlaw Otto

Covid-19 Update

The news over the last couple of weeks has been filled with reports about changes in our state mask mandate. We recognize that although there is a state mask mandate in place now, there is a strong possibility that this mandate may be overturned. However, it is the overwhelming recommendation of our local health departments that we continue to require that masks be worn by everyone in our building. Here at St. John the Evangelist School we will continue to require masks regardless of the state mandate.

As of today, the plan is to continue to require masks through the end of the school year. Of course we continue to follow infection numbers and meet regularly with our local health officers. Should there be any drastic changes to the data we receive, we will revisit this plan.

Please feel free to contact the office with any questions or concerns regarding masks.
Enrollment Update

Re-enrollment paperwork for the 2021-2022 school year was included in last week's paper envelope. Thank you to the families who have already returned theirs. If you have not done so, please review the information and return it to the school office no later than February 26th. Please note that all families must complete and return the registration paperwork, even if they will be enrolling their student utilizing Parental Choice Program funds. Enrollment is not complete for any student until we have the completed registration paperwork. Please call the school office at 321-8540 to schedule a time to speak with us if you have further questions.

Parental Choice Program Update

The first enrollment period for the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program period began on Monday, February 1st. Current participating families must re-enroll and are encouraged to complete all necessary paperwork during the February enrollment period. Do you have questions about re-enrollment? Call the school office. We can help.

Is your family part of the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program? The re-enrollment period runs from February 1st through April 15th. Current participating families must re-enroll for the upcoming year and are encouraged to complete all necessary paperwork as soon as the enrollment period begins. You are encouraged to apply early to guarantee a seat for your child.
Open Gym

Beginning Monday, February 22, we will be offering after school open gym time for our students in grades four through eight. Each of these students is bringing home a flier and sign up sheet for participation in Open Gym. Parents of interested students are asked to complete and return these letters to school no later than Wednesday, February 17th.
Happy 100th Day of School!
