Materials about Hurricane Agnes & Flood of '72
Next year in June will mark the 50th anniversary of Hurricane Agnes, the devastating and deadly storm that caused massive floods throughout the Southern Tier. We at SCRLC would like to put together an online exhibit to highlight our members' collections (like CMOG's Corning Flood of 1972 and Steele Memorial Library's Floods of Chemung County). Do you have material about this momentous event?

May Heritage Celebrations
Do you have collections or events happening in celebration of Asian / Pacific American Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month? Let us know and we'll help spread the word!
Grants & Assistance

The National Endowment for the Humanities has a grant opportunity (through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021) for organizations like yours: "eligible organizations seeking support for humanities positions and projects that have been adversely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic." The deadline is May 14.
Happening in the Neighborhood

Finger Lakes as a National Heritage Area
Congress is considering designating 14 counties of the Finger Lakes region a National Heritage Area, which could mean more grant funding for institutions in Cayuga, Chemung, Cortland, Livingston, Monroe, Onondaga, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne, and Yates. Leave a public comment on the feasibility study by June 1st.

Self-Guided History Tours of Ithaca
The History Center in Tompkins County has announced three new self-guided tours, all available through the free PocketSights app. The Historic Schools of Tompkins County Driving Tour, created in collaboration with Historic Ithaca, can be paired with the History Center's schoolhouse collection on NYHeritage. The two other tours, one of which is designed for driving and the other for walking, focus on public murals across Tompkins County. Check them out here!

In Sparkling Company Exhibit
The Corning Museum of Glass is proudly unveiling In Sparkling Company: Glass and the Costs of Social Life in Britain During the 1700s, this month, having been delayed from 2020. One of their supporting online events, open to the public, will feature Cheyney McKnight of NotYourMommasHistory.com and explore the experiences of 18th-century enslaved lady's maids and their role at the dressing table.

Now through May 10, teams can register and participate in a Yates County history scavenger hunt!

Cortland County Historical Society is running a cemetery tour with local author Mary Dexter on May 15.

Opening for the Season
Hyde Hall and Delaware County Historical Association are both opening on Saturday, May 29 for 2021.
Ideas & Inspiration for Imitation

The Society of American Archivists is inviting 300 word abstracts for 10 minute virtual poster presentations during their 2021 Research Forum, held in late July. The deadline is May 15.

A recent article from the Archives and Special Collections at the University of Minnesota, describing their forays into more thoughtful, inclusive archival description.

The Northeast Document Conservation Center (known as NEDCC) has put together a great continuing education series on preservation, and to supplement it - they've created a free, open-access textbook called Preservation 101: Preservation Basics for Paper and Media Collections.
