RCHP February Newsletter

Dear Church Family,

How do we speak of the unspeakable? Where do we go with our shock at the videos of the brutal murder of Tyre Nichols? Where do we go with our feelings about mass shootings in California carried out by senior citizens? Preparing for worship, on January 29th, was sobering. Pastor Stephanie had the job of crafting that particular service, and she wondered, all weekend, how much or how little to speak of the unspeakable. She made the right decision, I think, to speak very little of the specifics. Sometimes words don’t have to be spoken—the experiences of shocking violence had sufficiently washed over our congregants, as they had over the nation, and we didn’t need to hear anymore about evil and violence—there was just no more to say.

But what did need to be said was that we live in the “already/not yet” times. We have already seen Christ raised, and we ourselves, too, have been raised up. And yet, we wait for the full consummation of the resurrected, peaceable community. That was acknowledgement enough, that, despite Christ raised, things are not as they should be.

And then, after we sang the Kyrie, “Lord have mercy,” Pastor Terry announced these words.

True justice sometimes seems far off; the path

to equity too long and tiresome.

But through the ages we see that God does

not grow weary. God does not tire in working

for the oppressed. And God does not grow

calloused or cynical, but with a heart of

compassion, continues to work for restoration

and renewal.

Isaiah says it this way:

The Lord is the everlasting God,

the Creator of the ends of the earth.

God does not faint or grow weary;

God’s understanding is unsearchable.

God gives power to the faint

and strengthens the powerless.

Even youths will faint and be weary,

and the young will fall exhausted,

but those who wait for the Lord shall

renew their strength; they shall mount up

with wings like eagles;

they shall run and not be weary;

they shall walk and not faint.

Friends, I don’t know if in my entire life I have been more appreciative of God’s Assuring word than I was this past Sunday. Our God is faithful to stay strong, awake and loving, even now. Our God is not jaded, won’t give up and won’t give up on rebuilding a beloved community of people shaped in the divine image.

The Peace of Christ you,

Pastor Seth

Wednesday Morning Bible Study, 7:45am: A strong group of around 10 gather for an hour on Wednesdays in the church parlor, to read the Bible together and then to discuss how the text resonates with our lives as individuals and as a community of faith living in this world. Conversations are excellent. You are also welcomed to leave early to get to work on time. Pastor Seth leads this group.

Contemplative Thursdays

We've begun our practice of creating space on Thursdays for contemplation and meditation. Each Thursday morning from 7:00 to 8:00, the sanctuary is open and prepared for quiet prayer and meditation. Every two weeks we're also journeying through a podcast and/or book by Richard Rohr, exploring spiritually what it means to recognize the presence of and live in the faith of Christ. Learn more about these opportunities at www.rchighlandpark.org/thursdays.

Supporting Each Other During Difficult Times

An Introduction to Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministry is a unique ministry in our congregation in which trained and supervised lay persons, called Stephen Ministers, provide one-to-one confidential Christian care to individuals facing life challenges or difficulties.  Stephen Ministers have engaged in 50 hours of training in Christian caregiving, including general topics such as listening, feeling, boundaries, assertiveness, and confidentiality.  All Stephen Ministers attend ongoing supervision and continuing education with their Stephen Leaders to ensure they continue to provide the best care possible.

So for what type of issues do Stephen Ministers provider care?  They can help those who are discouraged, lonely, grieving a loss, struggling with their faith, facing unemployment, experiencing divorce or separation, or coping with a serious illness.  Stephen Ministers are not therapists, problem solvers, or casual visitors, and aren’t a replacement for mental health treatment.  They listen and care, and most importantly, bring the stability of God’s love and grace into people’s lives.

If you are interested in learning more about Stephen Ministry or becoming a Stephen Minister, please reach out to Pastor Stephanie, Anthony DiGrigoli awdigrigoli@gmail.com  or Renee DiGrigoli rmdigrigoli@outlook.com

W.I.S.E. CARE BLOG February 2023

Dear Friends, we invite you to read the following selection from the Surgeon General’s Report on Protecting Youth Mental Health that focuses on positive actions that are necessary to protect and promote the mental health of all of our children.

WE CAN TAKE ACTION

The good news is that, throughout the pandemic, many people have recognized the unprecedented  need to support youth mental health and wellbeing and have taken action to do so. Many young people  found ways to cope with disruption and stay connected. Families helped children adjust to remote  learning.104 Educators and school staff supported their students while facing unprecedented challenges  themselves. Health care professionals rapidly shifted to telehealth. Community organizations stepped  in to protect at-risk youth. Employers helped employees adapt to remote work environments. And  governments invested trillions of dollars to mitigate financial hardship for families, support COVID-19  testing and vaccination, provide health care and other social services, and support the safe reopening of  schools, among other policies.

But there is much more to be done, and each of us has a role to play. Supporting the mental health  of children and youth will require a whole-of-society effort to address long standing challenges,  strengthen the resilience of young people, support their families and communities, and mitigate the  pandemic’s mental health impacts. Here is what we must do:
