“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent
about things that matter.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The use of an anti-Semitic, racial slur spoken by Lowell School Committee Member Robert Hoey on a recent local cable television program can neither be tolerated nor ignored. Public Officials must be held to a high standard of conduct. In a school system (and community) working on equity and racial justice, there must be consequences to violating those standards.

We thank Mayor John Leahy for his swift statement and leadership in calling for a special meeting of the City Council and School Committee to consider a motion demanding the immediate resignation of Mr. Hoey. Moving forward to a more equitable and just society requires all of us to continue to speak up, take a stand, and ensure there are consequences to actions that violate these values.
