2020 Philip Moore Award
Tiernan Schindel, a finance major in the McCombs School of Business, is this year’s Philip Moore Award honoree. Tiernan has served the Tau Chapter as a Social Chair and as 2020 State Rush Captain, helping sign a pledge class of more than 60 new members. He is from Round Rock, Texas.
Philip Moore was known for his outstanding leadership, service and loyalty to his Tau brothers. A legacy who pledged with the Tau Chapter in 1966, he died in a car accident at age 29. The Texas Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation honors his memory each year by presenting the Philip Moore award to an upper classman who shares the high qualities of leadership, service and brotherhood for which Philip Moore is remembered.
Matthew Flaherty '19 Awarded
Walt Schoenvogel Scholarship
Matthew Flaherty, an economics major, was chosen for this year’s Walt Schoenvogel Scholarship. Matthew served as Vice President of Recruitment for UT's Interfraternity Council (IFC). He has served the Tau Chapter as Alumni Chair and on the Social and Rush Committees. He helped raise almost $60,000 for rush and helped sign the largest pledge class ever for Tau Chapter.

Matthew has contributed to the community in multiple ways, including delivering meals and fundraising for EMS Relief Fund last spring. He is from Houston/Kingwood, Texas.
Walt Schoenvogel  passed away in 2017 at the age of 63. Those who live in his hometown of Brenham knew him as a successful businessman, community leader, and philanthropist, but he is remembered by his Kappa Sig brothers as an exceptional athlete whose prowess helped bring intramural glory to Tau Chapter, and a loyal friend whose great sense of humor brought much happiness to those around him. To honor his memory, the Walt Schoenvogel Scholarship has been established to benefit a deserving Tau Chapter active each year who aspires to meet the high standards and principles of brotherhood, community service and philanthropy by which Walt himself lived.

Garrison Taska ’18 Recognized for Outstanding Leadership
The Tau Trustees awarded outgoing Tau Chapter Grand Master Garrison Taska with a special honor at this year’s alumni celebration for his exceptional leadership and exemplary service.

“I’ve worked with many Tau Chapter officers over a dozen years, and I don’t remember anyone who did a better job of communicating (returning every single phone call) or accomplishing what needed to be done,” said Mike Sharpe ’79, TKSEF Executive Director. “When others dropped the ball, Garrison would pick it up and see the task through to completion. It’s no wonder that a record pledge class was signed in spite of a global pandemic, and that the Chapter has made great strides with respect to ritual proficiency and fiscal accountability.”

Before serving as Grand Master, Garrison served the Chapter as Tailgate Coordinator and Rush Captain. He served on the Interfraternity Council executive board as Vice President of Recruitment in 2018, was the Gabe Higgins Award honoree in 2019, and one of two Richard G. Miller Memorial Foundation Scholarship winners in 2020.

Garrison is majoring in sports management and minoring in business. A native of Kingwood, Texas, he played baseball at San Jacinto before transferring to UT Austin his sophomore year.
Bill Zwiener ’73 Chosen for Frank Erwin Award

Tau Chapter actives selected TKSEF Chairman Bill Zwiener as this year’s recipient of the Frank Erwin Award. This honor is presented annually to an alumnus who has provided exceptional support and leadership to the Chapter.

“Bill has given more to the Chapter than anyone could ask for,” said Tau Chapter Grand Master Garrison Taska. "From the day I was elected Grand Master, Bill has been here for all of us. He gives countless hours of time to the Chapter and has helped us out financially on several occasions. He's opened his home and ranch to us, inviting us for crawfish boils and pool gatherings -- good times together that have made us closer as a fraternity. Bill has been a wonderful role model for us as well. He's a devoted husband and father who has raised four highly successful sons with his beautiful wife, Jeanie. It was an honor to present to him the Frank Erwin Award.”

Bill is one of three generations of Tau Kappa Sigs, along with his father, Lonny (1925 - 2005), and his son, Russell. A Tau Trustee for the past 17 years, Bill has served on both the Trustee Executive Committee and the Nominating Committee. As an active, he served as Grand Master of Ceremonies, Grand Procurator, and was a Silver Spur. He graduated from UT Austin with a BBA in Petroleum Land Management in 1977.

Bill is co-owner of Jones & Zwiener, Inc., one of the premier land management companies in Texas. Founded in 1987 to provide comprehensive land services to the oil and gas industry, Jones & Zwiener's reputation for integrity and performance is among the best in the industry.

He and his wife, Jeanie, have four sons: Russell, a pediatric gastroenterologist in New Orleans, Zach, head brewer for Community Brewing Company in Dallas, and Shane and Garrett, both Los Angeles-based actors. Russell and his wife, Jaime, have three daughters, Emmie, age 8, Molly, age 5, and CeCe, six months old.
Frank Erwin, Chairman of the University of Texas System Board of Regents from 1966 to 1971, was a devoted Kappa Sig who served as an alumnus advisor and a founding trustee of the Texas Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation. He was honored as Tau Man of the Year in 1965 and again in 1980.
