One of our priorities in our community, at the District, and at Wales is to create a strong culture of acceptance and understanding. You might hear your learner refer to “Habits of Mind” which are closely connected to our KMSD Graduate Profile; they are dispositions that help students problem solve, think critically and consider multiple perspectives. In February, we are taking a school wide approach focusing on the habit of mind, Thinking About Your Thinking and showing gratitude. Being able to examine our own thoughts while engaging in them is an important skill.
As we think about the month ahead, we are hoping to redefine how we show gratitude and appreciation for one another throughout the month, rather than celebrating only on Valentine’s Day. February is also Black History Month. As we consider this habit of mind and how we show gratitude, we plan to learn more about the history of and contributions to our community from people of color.
In February, we will not be exchanging valentines as we had in the past, this is due to the health concerns that accompany the practice of exchanging items from home to share with others. We believe that our focus throughout the month described above will help our learners continue the long tradition of taking time to recognize and celebrate each other in a different way.
