WES Announces its 2020 Award winners

Tina Gunnarsson
WES held its annual Caroline Haslett Lecture and Awards evening virtually this year on 10 December. Amanda Fisher, Chief Executive of Amey delivered the inspiring lecture to an audience of over 150 attendees on the evening. 

Awards were presented to Tina Gunnarsson, winner of the Karen Burt Memorial Award for the best newly chartered female engineer; Mark Wild, winner of the Men As Allies Award, and Fiona Hopkinson, winner of the Amy Johnson Inspiration Award

Relaunch of MentorSet

MentorSET, the cross-sector mentoring scheme run by WES, is open and accepting mentors and mentees. Sign-up today to receive support and guidance to forward your career or overcome a work related issue.  Perfect for your new year's resolution! To find out more have a look

WES Directors' Committees

The Women's Engineering Society is governed by the President and the Board of Directors and is supported by the Directors' Committees, established in 2020, which Members may apply to join. The Directors' Committees focus on:
  • Members
  • Partnerships
  • Events and
  • Communications
New Members to the Committees are recruited every January. If you would like to join one of the Committees for 2021, please email Elizabeth Donnelly at ceo@wes.org.uk, stating your name and which Committee you are interested in.  You must be a WES Member to be on the Committees, and you can join WES here.
WES Recordings available on website

WES is always committed to showing the enormous range of careers available within engineering, and this is especially apparent when looking at the different speakers of Cluster-led Member events that have taken place this year.  

Now available on the website for WES Members, hear WES members talk about their engineering projects or 'passions' including space exploration, tunnelling, electric vehicles and London accessibility.

21 Jan 10am - Implementing Diversity Networks in your Organisation - In this webinar we will hear from a few organisations on how they have implemented a Women's Network or Diversity Group in their organisation, challenges and successes. Our speakers are Carolina Escudero Concha - Electrical Engineer Vattenfall, Lara Tabet - Senior Engineer in the Infrastructure London Group at Arup and Caroline Thomas Director, Buildings Arup.
 
28 Jan 10am - Recruitment, Retention & Creating and Developing an Inclusive EDI Action Plan - In this session we will hear from Josh Young from Energy Jobline who will look at Recruitment and Retention as well as Elizabeth Oni-Iyiola from Inclusive Boards.
 
25 Feb 10am - Smallpeice Trust and Stemazing: Strategy for Engineering Early Engagement 
 
25 March 10am - Implementing Health & Well-being in your Organisation, Inclusive Leadership & Employee Communities 
New Start Up Partnership Package Launching Jan 2021

The WES Start Up Partnership is targeted at start up organisations in their first three years of registration. This package is aimed at start up organisations with less than £250k turnover who are dedicated to improving the diversity of their workforce and supporting females in engineering. It is an extremely useful platform to engage with other WES partner organisations that have similar challenges around D&I and to increase the awareness of your brand within an engineering context.

Coming soon - the next WES Annual Conference 2021

Next year's WES Annual Conference will be held over two days online, on the broad theme of 'serving society'. This extraordinary year has highlighted how engineers have not just created groundbreaking solutions and innovations in response to the Covid pandemic, but how they also deliver and maintain critical services and infrastructure in all aspects of society. 

With leading industry speakers, the conference will not only reflect and explore how engineers serve society but also look to the digital future. Alongside this will be sessions on professional development, career planning and technical skills for women engineers at every stage of their careers.

WES Early Careers Board

WES ECB member Caitlin McCall has been recognised for her contributions in manufacturing face visors at Swansea University at the outset of the COVID pandemic. She worked to source the materials, set up a production line and prepare the masks to contribute making PPE for frontline staff in the South Wales. Her group achieved the CE mark for their design and has worked closely with industry to transfer the knowledge and technology to a local company in South Wales
Swansea University have published an e-magazine on their positive impacts during the COVID pandemic. Check out all their great work here 

WES Early Careers Board New YouTube Release: Virtual Science Quiz

A new release from WES Early Careers board features two special guests: Helena Dodd WES University Groups Board Chair, and Tymele Deydier WES Events Directors' Committee. Both Members competed in a Halloween themed Virtual Science Quiz, filmed earlier in the year.
Each part includes quiz rounds hosted by WES ECB Member Kim Everitt and exclusive behind the scenes footage of our guests engineering applications. Join in on the quiz and see if you can answer the questions yourself, watch here

WES and Covid-19 

WES is continuing to operate during the changing times and has moved its events online.  WES Members all over the country are able to join the excellent technical webinars run by the London Cluster and the Scottish Cluster, with other Clusters hosting virtual gatherings too.

RAEng Awards and Fellowships Programme

The MacRobert Award  is the UK's longest running and most prestigious national prize for engineering innovation. The Award recognises outstanding innovation, tangible societal benefit and proven commercial success. It honours the winning organisation with a gold medal, and the team members a cash prize of £50,000. To find out more please go here

Policy Fellowship
Policy Fellows are an inspiring community of senior policymakers dedicated to exploring and sharing practices, developing connections between engineering and policymaking, and better solving critical policy and technical challenges. The next Policy Fellowships programme will run from April-June 2021. For more details have a look here
