Literacy Success Stories
Meet Shelly
Shelly (name changed to protect privacy) worked long 12-hour days at a local factory to support her family. She wanted to get her high school equivalency.

Her employer allowed her to change her schedule so she could attend classes at Grant County Family Literacy Services (GCFLS).

Grant County Member Spotlight: New Ideas for a New Year
As this new year begins, Grant County Family Literacy Services (GCFLS) is growing and regrouping with the changes and challenges of the pandemic.

“We're going through a transition stage right now and starting kind of new,” shares Marlene Klein, Treasurer of GCFLS, a literacy organization in existence since 1994.

Welcome Margaret Marcou to Our Team
Join us as we welcome Margaret Marcou to our team.

Margaret has over 10 years of experience in health care and clinical research. During her time as a clinical research coordinator, she increased the health literacy of patients by explaining how oncology clinical trials work. She has a Certificate of Global Practice and a Master of Applied Science in Community-based Primary Health Care Programs in Global Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She also has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Certificate in Human Resources from Cardinal Stritch University. Some of the causes Margaret works and volunteers for are literacy, health equity, nutrition, and food security. She is excited to work for a nonprofit and advance health equity in Wisconsin.

She says, "Working in health literacy is so rewarding for me because it combines so many things that are important to me. Reading and understanding are very important to a successful life but so is being able to understand health information so one can advocate for one’s health and the health of one’s family. Having this education and knowledge is central to equity and social justice."
