Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc
This Week: The Season of Blanc Rhone Varietals

Today, we turn our gaze to the textural and hearty white wines of the Rhone Valley. After an unusually hot summer, our bodies need to be gently guided into the frosted nights of November in Minnesota; we suggest warming up with a rich full bodied white wine - in between the much deserved nights enthralled with deep inky seasonal reds. The Rhone has cultivated a white wine culture famous for texturally weighty and hedonistic varietals such as: Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, & Grenache Blanc. Let's explore a few options!

Condrieu's Viognier is known for being downright bodacious (creamy and heavy on the palate) with a honeysuckle florality, notes of stone fruit, and nutmeg/vanilla from the barrel aging. We suggest trying out the Domaine Rostaing La Bonnette Condrieu ($108.99) as a benchmark reference - but lovely expressions of stand alone Viognier can be found at more approachable price points throughout France, America, and Australia. Condrieu shines when paired with rich seafood dishes such as fatty salmon or lobster, as well as with any decadent cream sauce or soft cheese. The Yalumba Y Series Viognier ($12.99) from Australia is a lighter expression of Viognier, but will still reveal the grape's iconic creamy notes of peach, apricot, ginger, and honeysuckle - enjoy with baked ham, spicy chicken dishes, or creamy homemade mac and cheese.

Marsanne & Roussanne are two iconic grape varietals of the Northern Rhone - notably of AOC's Hermitage, Cornas, and Saint-Peray where you will find the vineyards of Marsanne used for Alain Voge's wines Fleur de Crussol ($74.99) and Ongrie ($59.99). Voge's organic Marsanne wines are aromatic and have elevated texture from extensive lees aging. These wines will keep your attention with unfolding layers of white flower, honey, tangerine, and candied apricots - pair them with pork, veal, pungent cheeses, or swordfish. For a 'new world' journey into the varietals of Marsanne & Roussanne, we suggest the Kita T'aya White Blend ($26.99). Kita wines are made by native winemaker Tara Gomez, and the winery is owned by the Chumash Indian Tribe. "T'aya" translates to Abalone Shell, and the wine has a creamy full body with notes of honeysuckle, orange blossom, chamomile, and almonds.

Grenache Blanc is the principal grape in most Cote-Du-Rhone white blends, but has also seen great success in California. We love the Ridge Vineyards Grenache Blanc ($38.99) as an alternative to big oaky Chardonnays. This iconic American winery practices sustainable farming in the making of this full bodied white wine with notes of pear, orange blossom, sweet oak, and a lively acidity. This wine pairs seamlessly with most foods, especially of the Thanksgiving persuasion.

Staff Picks: What to Drink This Week
Things our staff thinks you should drink.

2018 Piaggia 'Il Sasso' Carmignano 2018 - $44.99
We hear the term "Super Tuscan" thrown around a lot in the wine world but Carmignano in Tuscany is the OG of Super Tuscans. They have been growing Cabernet and Merlot here for hundreds of years thanks to a wedding gift of vines from French royalty during the reign of Catherine de' Medici. With only 270 acres of vines, Carmignano is small but mighty. Mauro Vannucci and his daughter Silvia do everything by hand and farm their 15 hectares of vines organically. Il Sasso is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet and 10% Merlot that spends 12 months in French oak barriques. Intense and ruby red red with a complex nose of cherry jam, spice and cocoa. Full-bodied with a lovely balance between acid and tannins that pairs beautifully with Tuscan cuisine; try it with Florentine steak or baked duck, lamb skewers or your favorite BBQ dishes!

2018 Domaine Romanin 'Terroir de Fuissé' Pouilly-Fuissé - $26.99
Domaine Romanin is a 5th generation winery from the Maconnais region of Burgundy, and their Pouilly-Fuisse is the perfect pairing for fall comfort foods. Priced to be enjoyed any day of the week, this wine delivers complexity while being subtle and elegant. This Chardonnay is so distinctively Burgundian with beautiful minerality, a delicate touch of wood, and soft notes of lemon, grapefruit, pear, and vanilla with a rich nutty depth. The grapes are hand picked from 35+ year old vines in the pristine vineyards of the Fuisse village. Reach for this bottle when you next need a "sure-thing Chard" at the dinner table - it's impossible not to enjoy!

Red Locks Irish Whiskey - $26.99
Red Locks is a newcomer in the Irish whiskey category. This bold yet smooth whiskey is a collaboration between master distiller Noel Sweeney of Powerscourt Distillery and Minnesota legend Kieran Folliard. Their current release, Red Locks Founder's Edition, is only available in Minnesota. Red Locks, like many Irish whiskies, is triple distilled and bottled at 80 proof. The whiskey is aged for at least four years in a combination of barrels including virgin oak. The barrels and mash bill provide this blend a unique character highlighting bold flavors and velvety smoothness. I highly recommend picking up a bottle. While you are stopping in to pick up a bottle of Red Locks make sure you check out our recently expanded whiskey selection. We have over 450 whiskies on our shelves. We aren't finished growing yet, so you'll have to stop in often to see what we add to our selection.

2020 Enderle & Moll, Weiss & Grau, Baden - $25.99
Sven Enderle and Florian Moll have been producing Biodynamic, Natural wine in the Baden region of Germany since 2007 and have garnered huge acclaim for their wines. The Weiss & Grau is an orange wine that is close to half Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and half Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) that is fermented for 3-4 weeks on the skins giving the wine a lovely amber color. The wine shows aromas of apple and pear. The palate shows orange zest, pear, and perhaps some pineapple. For me this is a great aperitif wine but it would pair well with squash risotto or a roasted chicken. The wines of Erderle & Moll have developed a cult following so do not sleep on this one!

2017 Melville, Estate Syrah, Santa Rita Hills - $45.99
I get wrapped up in Syrah. I can't quite fathom why it always seems to be an also-ran. For me, the combination of exotic spice and brooding dark berry fruit in a well structured wine is irresistable. Melville's estate Syrah hangs so long it is harvested in November! The long growing season leaves the wine with a sleek, almost Pinot like elegance. Tell tale blackberry fruit mingles with a slightly piney sappiness before drifting into a seamless and lengthy finish. This is a thinker that, nevertheless, refreshes and compels the next sip.

Pere Mata, 'Cupada' Brut Rosé Nature, Cava -$19.99
Committed to organic viticulture on his 5 hectares of vineyards in the heart of Cava country, Penedes Spain, Pere Mata also harvests only grapes native in the region to make his Cava and ages it on the lees for at least 2 years. The lovely results are that his 'Cupada' Brut Rosé Cava is light, snappy, and bright. Rose petal aromas that tickle your nose lead to a thrist quenching palate of lightly spiced red berry fruit. Elegance and finesse. This is also a great alternative to Brut Rosé Champagne, that can easily run 3 times higher in price.
You can happily enjoy this refreshing sparkler any day of the week, guilt free! Salud!
