Annual Club Meeting

Greetings Club friends! I hope you all stayed warm during the stretch of below zero temps we had. With the ice fishing season closing soon, the cold snap will certainly give us some good ice to end the season on.

I was so excited to have our February club meeting with our newest friend Mandy Uhrich. What a great presentation she gave introducing us to how to chase sturgeon on the Rainy River. Mandy covered all the bases to get started fishing the biggest freshwater fish found in Minnesota. It is an experience I would encourage everyone to try. Thanks Mandy!!

I’m looking forward to our Annual Club Meeting in March with our guest speaker Mark Martin. With Mark’s many accomplishments, I can’t wait to learn new tactics and ideas to help us catch more walleyes.

I also want to welcome our newest sponsors, Check-It-Stik and Agency Bay Lodge. I’m looking forward to partnering with them as we continue to grow our club.

I look forward to seeing you all at the March meeting and don’t forget to bring a friend!

Both members of married couples who want to purchase a combination angling or hunting license in person will need to be present at the sales location starting Feb. 18, when the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will begin requiring both spouses to provide and verify their own complete customer records on file to purchase a combination license.

DNR’s 2020 fish stocking successful, despite challenges

Anglers can look forward to positive results from fish stocking that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conducted in 2020, despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. While the vast majority of fish in Minnesota waters are the result of natural reproduction in healthy habitats, stocking can provide angling opportunities where they might not otherwise exist. “This ended up being a productive year for fish stocking even as COVID-19 changed how we performed our work,” said Brian Nerbonne, DNR central region fisheries manager. “Our staff were able to find creative ways to stock fish in Minnesota waters.” In mid-April, the DNR canceled its 2020 egg collection operations for walleye, northern pike, muskellunge and steelhead because the work could not be done safely under COVID-19 guidelines.

Guest Speaker Re-cap Featuring
Mandy Uhrich
TCWU hosted Mandy Uhrich at our February Club Meeting. Mandy has a passion for the outdoors and channeled it into a rewarding career with the Minnesota DNR. She enjoys the competition of Tournament fishing and has achieved many top finishes to her credit. She gives back to the outdoor community by volunteering for events that support and increase fishing opportunities for women and youth anglers. She is a Co-host of Lakeland Fishing Tips and shared many cool tips with the club.

For those who couldn't attend Enjoy the re-cap.
About Mandy

She Is a Tournament Angler who only needs to catch 8 more North American species on her bucket list. She hosts the Brainerd outdoors Weekly Radio show 98.3 Saturday mornings. Tune in when you have a chance. Likes to teach/coach all species of fishing. Challenges us all to be prepared with options to target different fish and increase opportunities for catching fish.

Mandy called out the early spring multispecies opportunities at Lake of the Woods. Premier Walleye, Big pike and Lake Sturgeon trophy fishing are all available through the ice and by boat. She was excited to educate us on the Lake Sturgeon opportunities available on the Rainy River.
Interesting facts on the Minnesota Lake Sturgeon

The Sturgeon species dates back 163 million years, wow they were here when there were dinosaurs.

Lake Sturgeon almost disappeared from Minnesota in the early 1900's. During the 1800's sturgeon were considered a nuisance fish because they easily broke through commercial fishing nets.

There were many fish that weighed up to 250 lbs were taken out of the rivers and lakes they inhabited and stacked on the shorelines like logs; sturgeon were also used to power steam boats because their meat has a high oil content.
Where to find them

They are quietly located in all Minnesota drainages except the Missouri river watershed. Minnesota lakes and rivers hold 30,000 sturgeon throughout Minnesota.
They prefer clean water, firm level river bottoms of sand, gravel in depths of 20 foot deep or less.

There are 27 different variety’s of Sturgeon and they have a life span is 65-90 years for males and 80 to 150 years for the females, wow! Males reach sexual maturity at 15-20 years and Females range from 15- 22. Females spawn only once every 4 to 9 years, and only 10 - 20% of these fish successfully spawn.

The Minnesota DNR are concerned that there are a lot of old fish and not as many young ones, which is signaling a population decline.

The Lake of the Woods Sturgeon migrate up the Big Fork and Little fork rivers, which are key spawning grounds. Sturgeon put the feed bag on during pre-spawn and then they quit eating during the spawning run. They drop up to 100,000 eggs in a spawn and the eggs hatch in 5 days. The young Sturgeon hang out in the rivers for five years before heading out to the big lake.

How they forage

They forage in areas with sandy, gravelly and muddy bottoms using their snouts to stir up the benthic material and their powerful sucking mouths to draw in the water and floating debris. The small particles of sand and muck are expelled through their gills and the larger food items are consumed. Sturgeon primarily eat aquatic macroinvertebrates, freshwater mussels, snails, crustaceans, and small fish. They do not eat decomposing or dead organisms, preferring fresh food even in hatchery situations. Secret Tip, Leeches and Crayfish are like bacon for Sturgy. They have and use an electrode system through their head and whiskers to feed. They are able to feel and sense forage from these electrical impulses through the whiskers and quickly suck it up.

Equipment

  • You need a heavy rod with medium fast action to support the lift of the fish off the bottom 7-9 foot length recommended. Rod needs some flex.
  • You need a high end reel to hand the drag and abuse. If you like open face reels, Salt water open face reels are a good choice.
  • Line 65 - 80 pound braid, which requires a rod with flex as braid has no stretch
  • Big weights up to 5oz. match the size of the weight to the current
  • Don’t use jigs they swallow them, which increases mortality. Use 5/0 circle hooks and they will never be gut hooked.
  • Use wire leaders and swivels and make sure they are strong heavy test. 18 inch leaders are the norm. Mandy uses 9 inch at times.
  • Use Night Crawlers and hook them so they have the tentacles reaching out
  • Sturgy often follow the same trails, they like smooth bottoms and follow the same trails
  • Anchor above the front of the hole and fan cast down to it
  • Timing is everything, water temps dictate their location and they spawn in the 50- 60 degrees.
  • Survival rate is high but DNR should require circle hooks to control mortality rates
  • Key on clean river and lake bottom paths

Mandy is grateful for every experience, opportunity, friendship and adventure; She works ardently to pay it forward, by sharing those adventures, experiences and education to ignite an outdoor passion in others. She is a supporter and volunteer for the Minnesota DNR Bow program (Becoming and Outdoors Woman)
  • It is free for families and women

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
