SAINT MARK'S MISSION & OUTREACH

Little Pantry Installed

Last Sunday, we opened a Free Little Pantry on the east side of our building near both our preschool and church entrances. The pantry is a way that our preschool families, Scout Pack 990, our church members and our neighborhood can all work together to support one other. Pictured above: The Morton family while placing the first items in the pantry that was dedicated in their honor.

How Does the Free Little Pantry Work? This little pantry is an easy way for neighbors to help neighbors who need food, hygiene, or paper items. Even though its home is located on the church property, this mini pantry belongs to all of us. Please take care of it and the space around it. Tidy the mini pantry if it needs it. If you can, clean up spills, and please don’t litter.

Give what you can by placing food, hygiene, or paper items inside the mini pantry. Give what you would want to receive. An easy rule of thumb: buy extra of what you buy your house-hold. No gift is too small. A single can of green beans can help. Items should be unexpired and in good condition.

Take what you need. If you find items inside and you need them, take them and know we care about you. Please remember the mini pantry belongs to all of us and take only those items you need, trusting the mini pantry will be here for you again.

Join St. Mark's Formation Team for Children & Youth

As a faith community we ALL share responsibility for supporting the spiritual growth of the next generation. There are countless ways for each of us to build relationships and build faith with the children and youth at St. Mark's. One of these ways is to join the formation team and help facilitate one of our youth groups or Sunday School Classes. Sunday School resumes on Sunday, September 9th and we are looking for members who are interested in joining our teams!

If you are interested in learning more or getting involved with our Godly Play class (ages ~2-8), please contact Mother Sylvia via email here

If you are interested in learning more or getting involved with our upper elementary (ages ~8-12), middle school (ages ~12-14) or high school (ages~14-18) youth groups, please contact Deacon David via email here.

New Icon: Saint Melangell

Saint Melangell

Saint Melangell was an Irish nun who died in 590. Her feast day is celebrated on 27 May. The daughter of an Irish king, she went to central Wales to become a hermit.

The prince of Powys, Brochwel Ysgithrog, granted her land after meeting her on a hunting trip, and she founded a community of women, serving as abbess for 37 years. Her shrine was restored in 1959 at St. Melangell's Church, Pennant Melangell and Pennant Melangell has been a place of pilgrimage for many centuries. Melangell remains the patron saint of hares. Bones said to be those of the saint have been deposited within the shrine.

This icon can be found on the southern wall of the Nave. She was prayerfully rendered by one of our very own iconographers, Lin Marksbury.

Safe Church at St. Mark's

Surviving & Preventing Abuse: St. Mark's Survivors Share Their Stories

Each summer at St. Mark's we work to get ready for a new school and program year. Part of getting ready is renewing our commitment to making St. Mark's a Safe Church, for everyone--including children, youth, elders, and other vulnerable people. One step we can take to prevent abuse of all kinds, including sexual abuse, is to openly talk about it as a church community. Talking about difficult subjects in the context of a safe, supportive, spiritual community can be healing for those who have been impacted by abuse and also play an important role in protecting others from experiencing abuse.

At the end of August, we will offer a two-part Safe Church Forum at St. Mark's

Part 1 (Sunday, August 20th, 11:30 a.m.): members of St. Mark's who have been impacted by abuse will share their experiences as part of a panel discussion on Surviving Abuse.

Part 2 (Sunday, August 27th, 11:30 a.m.): we'll review/highlight the basic Safe Church policies that all members of St. Mark's are expected to uphold as part of our commitment to making St. Mark's a Safe Church.

If you have been impacted by abuse and would like to discuss your experience with a member of St. Mark's clergy and/or participate in our panel discussion on August 20th, please contact Mother Sylvia (via email here) to schedule an appointment for further conversation.
