Dear Trustees,
Thank you for your incredible support of the "Give to UC Merced" initiative, which has already raised more than $125K for projects across campus! The initiative website and videos featuring students who received support through the Trustees' Impact Fund and Oxygen Fund are linked and included below.
We would especially like to recognize your contributions to the board's fundraising initiative, the 2021 Trustees' Impact Fund. With 83% board participation, the fund has raised nearly $130K throughout the calendar year to benefit student success. Thank you for your incredible investment in our students' futures, and we look forward to sharing updates at the February board meeting.
As we prepare to close the fall semester and another unconventional year, we would be remiss not to acknowledge the critical role that this board and its members play in enabling UC Merced to thrive and rise. Thank you for your partnership and steadfast commitment to our students and community.
This weekend, we will have the privilege of honoring nearly 400 graduates and their families during our first in-person commencement ceremonies in two years. We hope that you are able to join us virtually in celebrating this momentous occasion with our resilient scholars - the videos will be available on the Commencement website. We hope that you are also able to join the Innovate to Grow showcase - find more information here.
Thank you, again, for all that you do. Take care and Happy Holidays!
Warmest regards,
Ed, Lisa, and Stephanie

UCAN is a community of committed people who lend their voices to shape state and federal policies promoting the university's mission.
The new year is right around the corner and with it comes a fresh opportunity to push for the priorities that can help the UC community thrive. This includes more federal financial aid for college students; state investments to help California rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic, and urgent action on climate change, to name a few.

After a monthlong collaboration between dozens of UC Merced students, professional artists, National Park Service staff and Merced community members, Shakespeare in Yosemite's first feature-length film, "Imogen in the Wild," celebrated its premiere in November on YouTube.
The 90-minute film is an adaptation of Shakespeare's play "Cymbeline," rewritten to address concerns of land use and environmental justice facing California. In this version, Cymbeline is the mayor of "The Town" near "The Wild," represented by Yosemite National Park. Read more here.

A generous gift from UC Merced alumnus Dr. Eric Chen ’11 and his wife Joanne Hsu to establish a new scholarship is advancing the university’s efforts to encourage and support students pursuing medical studies and training in the Central Valley. Scholarship funding – which includes contributions from the Chen Family Foundation and Chen’s employer, Megaforce International Corporation – will benefit promising UC Merced undergraduates enrolled in the campus’ Bachelor of Science to Medical Degree (BS to MD) program, which is scheduled to launch in Fall 2023.

Their community college experiences occurred hundreds of miles apart, but Kim Arellano Carmona and John Wilson each found the support and inspiration that would propel them to Ph.D. candidate studies at UC Merced. Now they both have a golden opportunity to give back as awardees of a fellowship program that has them shadowing community college mentors and, in the spring semester, teaching classes at Bakersfield College.
