Electric Bike Rules of the Road

With summer in full swing, you have probably noticed that electric bikes (or e-bikes) continue to be a common site in our neighborhoods and on our major roadways. The increase of e-bikes in the community has obvious benefits such as reducing car trips, increasing youth mobility and independence and promoting outdoor activities. However, it has also sparked safety concerns and the City would like to remind residents of the rules of the road so that riders, pedestrians and other vehicles can safely share the road.

Recently, at the July 12th City Council Meeting, the Council held a discussion on e-bike safety. The discussion revolved around increased education and outreach (especially for young bicycle riders), improving bicycle infrastructure to make biking around town safer and possible changes to the Municipal Code to give the Sheriff’s Department more enforcement tools to address unsafe riders. Staff will be coming back to Council at an upcoming meeting to continue these discussions and to implement appropriate safety and enforcement measures.

It's Officially Mosquito Season!

As you have probably noticed, there has been an increase in the number of mosquitoes recently due to a variety of factors, including the warmer weather and high tides. To protect our community and the environment, the County Vector Control Program (VCP) deploys mosquito larvicide applications via helicopters in areas where manual treatment is not feasible. The granular larvicides used act specifically on mosquito larvae and will not harm people, pets, plants, or wildlife. You may have already noticed these helicopters in action during spraying operations at both the San Elijo and San Dieguito lagoons yesterday and today. Additional aerial larvicide applications are scheduled for this August and September.

The link below directs you to essential tips to protect yourself and your home from mosquitoes including preventing breeding by promptly emptying standing water from watering cans and plant drip pans, and fixing leaky faucets and hoses. Keep your patio clear of potential breeding debris and remember to wear long sleeves, pants, or use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535 when outdoors. If you encounter a mosquito problem in your neighborhood, reach out to the County Vector Control Program through their Tell Us Now! app or another provided contact method by clicking the Learn More button below.
